Google Stadia is not dead — More than 100 games coming in 2021

The situation for Google Stadia looked bleak earlier this month when Google announced the closure of two first-party game studios and cancelled all titles for 2021 and beyond. However, the short-term outlook for the streaming service appears relatively bright, with Google promising that "more than 100 games" will appear on the platform this year.

Google made this promise in a post on the Stadia Community Blog, revealing nine titles and release dates for the first six.

The first title is Shantae: Half Genie Hero Ultimate Edition, which will be released on February 23; the platform game was released on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, and Vita in December 2016 and has been generally well received, but is not not a new game. Nevertheless, this title includes all the DLC, and its predecessor, Shantae: Risky's Revenge, was released on the same day, making it a must-have for platforming fans.

These two platformers will be followed on March 2 by "It came from space and ate our brains," which was released in 2015. Sports fans will see the list return to platformers with "FIFA 21" on March 17, followed by the new "Kaze and the Wild Masks" on March 26; on April 23, Sega will bring its acclaimed "Yakuza" spin-off "Judgment" to the platform.

Then there are three titles with release dates yet to be determined. Hellpoint, a space station-based RPG that closely resembles Dark Souls; another soccer game in the form of Street Power Football; and Killer Queen, a multiplayer action platformer for four players locally and eight online. Black". Interestingly, the Stadia version promises cross-play with Steam and Switch players.

An interesting combination, but only two titles can be considered heavy hitters, "FIFA" and "Judgement," all of which (with the exception of "Wind and Wild Masks") were previously playable elsewhere. It is possible that all of the remaining 91+ titles are triple-A games, but given that this announcement comes after a troubling week for Stadia, it seems a bit unlikely. If the company has an eye-popping game in the pipeline, wouldn't it make sense to mention it, even if it doesn't have a release date?

We will have to wait and see; there is no doubt that Stadia is in a tough spot, but there is still a chance that things will turn around in 2021; at CES it was announced that LG's 2021 TVs will support stadiums without any additional hardware, and the company has the best TVs being manufactured, this could be exactly the coup that stadiums have been looking for.
