The iconic design of the all-in-one iMac 2021 may be changing for the first time in eight years, Bloomberg reports.

But apparently there is still a certain familiarity to the new iMac, sources told the site. That's because the new design has a flatter back, fewer borders, and the metal jaws have been removed, resembling the $5,000 Apple Pro Display XDR pictured above.

Apple will release two versions of the new hardware, codenamed J456 and J457, which will likely replace the 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs. The report does not specify whether the dimensions of the new models will mirror the older versions.

Of course, these outward design changes conceal an even more dramatic change internally: after the successful launch of the MacBook Air M1, MacBook Pro M1, and Mac mini m1, the new iMacs will also abandon Intel for Apple's own ARM-based chip which will be equipped with Apple's own ARM-based chips.

This may scare some power users, but it's really not true: the Apple M1 processor exceeds our expectations and makes the experience much faster than expected. As the Apple Mac mini review says, "In most applications, Apple M1 chip can compete and win against Core i3 and Core i5 processors.

The all-in-one iMac won't be the only one getting a refresh in 2021, Bloomberg's sources say. the Mac Pro desktop machine is also said to be getting a refresh, and two versions of the computer are expected this year. the first is look identical to the current model released in 2019, and the company is considering using Intel chips in this model.

The second model, however, will have an Apple silicon chip and a new look. Impressively, it will be less than half the size of the current Mac Pro, which Bloomberg says "could evoke nostalgia for the Power Mac G4 Cube" sold between 2000 and 2001. Here's a photo to jog your memory:

Finally, Bloomberg's sources say that Apple is developing a lower-priced external monitor to accompany the Pro Display XDR, which is aimed at consumers. The screen will not be as bright, nor will it have the same contrast ratio, but it should be considerably cheaper than the $5,000 Apple is asking for its current, more expensive model.
