It's a great season to be a Star Wars fan. The Mandalorian just finished a successful second season, Ubisoft is hard at work on a huge open-world Star Wars game: and "Jedi: Fallen Order" gets frame rate and resolution improvements on both PS5 and Xbox Series X Just got the next-gen patch: the Xbox Series X version of the "Fallen Order" patch runs slightly better.
This information comes from a press release from EA, which briefly summarizes how the company optimized "Jedi: Fallen Order" for the two next-gen consoles: This patch improves frame rate and resolution. The patch improved frame rate and resolution on both PS5 and Xbox Series X. Both consoles now have a frame rate of 60 frames per second, but the Xbox Series X supports higher and more dynamic resolutions.
Compare and contrast: Fallen Order does not offer dynamic resolution on PS5, instead locking in at 1200p (previously it was between 810 and 180p). Post-processing resolution is up to 1440p, which is very respectable for a QHD resolution, but still falls short of the console's usual target of 4K.
The Xbox Series X, on the other hand, offers a dynamic resolution of 1512p to 2160p (full 4K). Post-processing resolutions reach 4K.
In short, the Xbox Series X can deliver smoother frame rates at higher resolutions. While Jedi Fallen Order is still quite pretty on PS5 and much better than before, the Xbox Series X offers the best visuals we've seen outside of the PC version.
Whether this will have a practical effect depends on whether you already play the game, how fancy your TV is, how much you value graphic fidelity, etc. For gamers who are trying to decide between the Xbox Series X and PS5 I'm not sure if the Xbox Series X is more powerful than the PS5, but the Fallen Order patch suggests that the Xbox Series X may be slightly more powerful (spec-wise, it certainly is), and I'm not sure if the Xbox Series X is more powerful than the PS5.
I was able to try out the new patch on the Xbox Series X and could confirm that it makes a huge difference in moment-to-moment gameplay. Kal's movement and combat moves feel instantaneous at 60fps, and everything in the game looks just a bit sharper and more vivid than before. I don't have the PlayStation version of the game, so I can't directly compare the two.
My gut feeling is that 60fps resolution is the most important thing the patch offers, and since both consoles can handle it, there is no reason for PS5 owners to panic (or Xbox Series X owners to gloat). However, Microsoft promised early on that the Xbox Series X would be a major destination for backward-compatible games, and so far it has delivered on that promise.
