Mario fans, here we come! Announced today, Thursday, January 12, the Mario Red & Blue Edition Switch is the stylish newest addition to the super-popular Nintendo Switch we already know and love.
As you can see in the photo above, the Switch is wrapped in the plumber's signature red, as are the dock and Joy-Con controller. Blue accent colors can be seen on the Joy-Con grip and wrist strap. According to Nintendo's website, it will be priced at $299 and will be available on February 12.
It can be considered the successor to the wildly popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons Edition Switch, but with a few additions. A matching carrying case featuring elements of Mario's wardrobe, including his glove (clenched fist), overalls, hat and mustache, is included as an extra. [The zipper on the carrying case and the clip on the Joy-Con strap have a yellow accent mark (the symbol of the gold coins Mario is saving for his retirement).
At $299, the price is the same as the regular Switch. And while Nintendo is not calling it a limited edition, given the precedent set by the Animal Crossing edition, this model will likely be hard to find after its release.
Nintendo's Mario Switch design leaves one wanting more (of course, one's tastes may differ). The dock is a bit spartan and could have used icons similar to those found on the case.
This is the latest Mario product announcement in the months-long Super Mario Bros. 35th anniversary festivities. Nintendo will begin celebrating that icon's birthday on September 3, 2020, ending on March 31.
Today, Nintendo also unveiled Bowser's Fury, an expansion game that will be included with the port of Super Mario 3D World for the Nintendo Switch. Here's the trailer:
