Watching TV in bed is already an everyday luxury, but this new concept from LG looks to make it even better without cluttering up the walls.
The "55-inch Transparent OLED Smart Bed" is an LG Display concept showcased at this year's all-digital CES 2021. This is not the bed itself, but a unit that is placed at the foot of the bed, with a transparent display that slides in and out of the enclosure.
The smart bed screen can be used in multiple aspect ratios and sizes, depending on how far it extends from the base unit. For example, the display can be fully enclosed to view the date and time and music playback options (due to the cutouts in the unit), partially extended to get weather updates, or fully extended when watching a movie.
The screen is 40% transparent, allowing the user to look into the display while watching. The smart bed also has built-in speakers, so there is no need to worry about cables tangling around the bed and spoiling the view.
It takes about 25 seconds for the display to fully extend. In the GIF below, you can see a speeded-up version of this.
Aside from looking really great, this type of screen would be useful for interacting with people while watching TV or monitoring something elsewhere in the room, such as a pet.
This smart bed is interesting, but not yet a real product; one can only hope that LG Display will eventually bring a similar device to market, even if it will be expensive. As was the case with the rollable TV technology the company showed off at past trade shows, it finally appeared as a consumer product last October as the LG Signature Series OLED R.
This is not the only application for LG's new transparent display; the CES lineup also includes demonstrations of screens that allow passengers and guests in subway cars and restaurants to enjoy the view of the outside world and the chefs who prepare the food while viewing menus, maps, and other relevant information Included.
