Earlier this month, we learned that the PS5 will lag slightly behind the Xbox Series X in terms of technology. Variable refresh rate (VRR) support will not be available at launch, which is quite disappointing for those with TVs that support VRR.
Fortunately, Sony has confirmed that this will not be the case for long, as VRR will be part of a future software update to the PS5.
This news is noted in an updated system FAQ on the official PlayStation Blog: "The PS5 hardware supports variable refresh rate (VRR) through HDMI 2.1. It also notes that VRR will be available after a future software update for console owners with compatible TVs. Naturally, the game itself must also support VRR.
For those who don't know, VRR is a fairly important feature for consoles and games that aim for high frame rates. In simple terms, it means that the best TVs can adjust the refresh rate in real time to match the output of the game itself and prevent stuttering or tearing of the screen due to frame rate changes. This makes the overall gameplay experience smoother, which is exactly why people prefer high frame rates in the first place.
It is unclear why VRR was not available from launch, especially since Sony's official spec sheet confirmed that VRR was supported; the Xbox Series X is available right out of the box, with no need to wait for updates.
It is unclear how long we will have to wait for the PS5 to get VRR, but it is worth remembering that VRR is a luxury feature. Many users have reported problems with the console, including the recently discovered "waiting for download" bug, and Sony's priority should be to make sure everything is running properly. Therefore, it is unlikely that the VRR will appear before the end of the year.
