This PS5 Feature Eats Up Your Storage — How to Turn It Off

PS5 load times are screamingly fast, but capacity is limited, with some games occupying only 825 GB and others more than 50 GB. Therefore, it may be wise to turn off the automatic capture of video clips when trophies are earned.

In a world where watching people play games and sharing clips of game footage seems to be as popular as playing the games themselves, this feature is clever of Sony. However, capturing clips at 4K resolution consumes a lot of SSD space.

Given that the PS5 SSD's available SSD space is 667.2GB when the operating system and UI are launched, automatically saved clips could further reduce even just limited storage.

Therefore, turning off this feature could be the difference between regaining more storage space and being able to download the latest PS5 games or being forced to erase another game from your installed collection.

If you are lucky enough to have a PS5, you may not know about this feature. But it's easy to find and turn off.

Simply go to the PS5 settings menu in the upper right corner of the console's UI and scroll down to the "Capture and Broadcast" settings menu.

From there, go to the "Trophies" menu. Below that you will find the "Save Trophy Screenshot" and "Save Trophy Video" options, both of which are on by default.

To stop the automatic capture of trophy video clips, the latter must be turned off. Also, turning off the automatic screenshot feature should save an additional step in valuable SSD space.

Once you have toggled these options, simply press the circle button on the dual-sense controller to return to the home screen from the menu. Very easy.

With the large capacity of modern games, the PS5's SSD will fill up quickly. But keep in mind that you can save older backward-compatible PS4 games to an external hard drive.

Also, at some point Sony will approve an internal PCIe 4.0 SSD, which will allow for more SSD capacity throughout the console. Unfortunately, until then, you will have to be very selective about what you install on the PS5's SSD.
