With PS5, trophies collected in games may become worth more than mere bragging rights. These trophies could actually unlock bonus perks, such as content that would normally be paid for.
Our sister site GamesRadar noticed a small detail in last week's PS5 User Experience preview video that revealed Sony's hand. Specifically, they said that among the trophies for Destruction AllStars was a fine print indicating unlockable rewards for PSN profiles.
As seen in the pictures below, the "Rookie" and "Wreckognized" trophies for the game "Destruction AllStars" have fine print referring to profile banners (for Rookie) and profile avatars (for Wreckognized) There are. Neither appears to be unlocked yet, and the art is a lock icon.
Having a rare PSN account profile photo and profile artwork would be a great way to make a trophy more than just a badge of honor. These days, people are willing to pay extra for new themes and want to game in a world where good performance is also a valid currency.
While unlockables linked to trophies are not 100% new (GR points out that there are themes linked to platinum trophies in "Bloodborne"), this is PS5's attempt to incorporate more trophy-based perks into the way the game It appears to be. At least, that is the case if this is built into the user interface.
I would have been more engaged in "The Last of Us Part 2" had I known that I could unlock more items on my account rather than simply competing with my online friends for trophies. I know people who love to brag about their trophies, but that certainly doesn't apply to everyone.
If you haven't seen it yet, check out the PS5 UI video below; you'll be impressed by how much more modern it looks than the PS4 interface.
