One of the problems with buying digital versions of Nintendo Switch games was that you could not get a refund if you changed your mind about your pre-order. But that has finally changed.
Pre-orders made on the Nintendo Switch eShop can now be cancelled with a full refund if cancelled before the game is preloaded or at least 7 days before release.
"If you pre-ordered content from the Nintendo eShop, payment will not be processed until at least 7 days before the game launches. You may cancel your pre-order at any time before payment is processed and the game is pre-installed on your system," Nintendo explained. The company then posted a handy FAQ detailing how pre-orders and game preloading works in the eShop.
Nintendo also clearly states when games will be preloaded and gives customers ample warning as to when the deadline for refunds will be.
Prior to this policy change, Nintendo charged eShop customers immediately for their pre-orders; given that some eShop games are quite expensive, it is not surprising that this policy has frustrated some Nintendo Switch users.
This consumer-friendly move will help Nintendo catch up with other online game stores and platforms. Steam, for example, offers a full refund if a game has not been played for more than two hours. And if you download a game from the Google Play store and don't play it, you can get a refund for that if you act quickly. Titles such as [Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4] have not yet been released. And with the PS5 and Xbox Series X expected to launch in November, it will come as no surprise to find that Nintendo is keeping things low key while stealing gaming headlines.
