TCL has partnered with THX to offer the first TVs with THX Certified Game Mode, a new certification first announced at CES 2020 that will be available on the upcoming TCL 6 Series Roku TVs, making it an industry first. The addition of this new feature will be a major upgrade for products familiar on our Best TVs list and Best Gaming TVs.
THX Certified Game Mode promises speedy response and above-average picture quality, along with new features such as automatic low-latency mode and variable refresh rate capabilities included in the new HDMI 2.1 specification.
TCL has made a name for itself in the TV world by delivering stunningly high picture and sound quality on TVs priced lower than competing models from Samsung and LG. This new certification from an industry leader like THX will no doubt cause potential customers to rethink TCL's reputation as simply a manufacturer of superior budget TVs.
With the addition of HDMI 2.1 to the latest TVs, many new smart TVs tout gamer-friendly features like automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) and variable refresh rate (VRR). These features seamlessly switch the TV to game mode each time the console is activated and eliminate screen tearing with frame synchronization technology similar to AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync.
However, THX Certified Game Mode is more than just a rehash of features included in the new HDMI 2.1 specification. While these features make gaming more comfortable on any TV, THX goes above and beyond in this certification by testing the certified TVs along several points to ensure that they meet specific criteria for an even better gaming experience.
Some of the criteria include everything from color quality and refresh rate to rise time, which looks at how quickly a TV can respond from dark to light, which is essential for fast-paced gaming.
According to TCL, the new TCL 6 series will be available this summer and will be the first TVs to feature THX certification. Time will tell if this new certification will catch on in the TV industry, but for now, it promises to be the best 4K gaming experience ever.
