LG's new AirPods Killer can clean itself up

Editor's Note: The LG Tone Free earbuds are now available in the UK.

LG has announced new wireless earbuds ready to compete with Apple's AirPods and Samsung's Galaxy Buds. And at least one of the new LG Tone Free earphones spares you the trouble of cleaning up after yourself.

The HBS-FN6 model of Tone Free earphones comes with a UVnano case, which LG says is designed to remove germs and bacteria that may adhere to the earphones.

According to LG, this is motivated by research showing that earphones harbor more bacteria than a kitchen cutting board. According to the company, UV light can remove nearly all potential E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus from the silicone ear gels and inner mesh of the HBS-FN6 buds.

When not removing bacteria, the case extends the playback time of the Tone Free earbuds; both the HBS-FN6 and the lower model HBS-FN4 promise six hours of music playback. The charging case adds three more charge cycles, extending playback time by 18 hours; LG says a five-minute charge provides one hour of music playback.

Other than the UVnano case for the HBS-FN6, not much else separates the two LG Tone Free models. Both feature a canal-type design that promises a comfortable fit and boast sound support by Meridian Audio. While we haven't had a chance to listen to the new earphones in person yet, LG promises an even higher dimension of sound with Meridian's Headphone Spatial Processing and Digital Signal Processing technologies, and LG promises this experience, just in the form of earbuds, likened to listening to real speakers with immersive clarity.

Both Tone Free models feature customized EQ settings and four presets (Natural, Immersive, Bass Boost, and Treble Boost). The presets can be switched according to preference: balanced sound, extended audio, punchier sound, clearer vocals, etc.

The HBS-FN6 and HBS-FN4 will be available in Stylish Black and Modern White in July in the US and Europe. At £149.99 in the UK, the HBS-FN6 earphones are the more expensive of the two Tone Free models, while the HBS-FN4 earphones cost £99.99.

Pricing in the U.S. is unknown, and LG has reported that U.S. pricing will be announced closer to launch. However, given the way companies adjust prices on a market-by-market basis, the HBS-FN4 and HBS-FN6 will likely cost around $99 and $149, respectively.
