Apple's new over-ear headphones have been named AirPods Studio. The company aims to offer the best noise-canceling headphones and is expected to release its first real competitor to Bose and Sony this year.
The leak from Apple analyst John Prosser came via Twitter, and according to him the AirPods Studio will be priced at $349. That's $50 less than the Bose 700 headphones' list price of $399. But what are you going to get for your money?
According to an earlier Bloomberg report, Apple will offer over-ear headphones with noise-canceling capabilities. There is a high-fashion-focused version and a fitness-focused model. Both headphones, however, offer interchangeable earpads and headphone pads, which Bose does not.
The fashion-focused AirPods Studio are made of a "leather-like fabric," while the sports headphones are made of a more "breathable material." Additionally, the AirPods Studio has a retro aesthetic, with oval-shaped earcups joined to the headband by a thin metal arm.
It is very likely that the AirPods Studio is a true Bose competitor while the AirPods X has its own name and identity, as there have been previous reports that Apple will offer AirPods X targeted at fitness crowds. In a response in a Twitter thread, Prosser confirmed that the AirPods X is "for sports and won't appear until later this year."
So when will the AirPods Studio be released? Apple's WWDC 2020 virtual event is currently scheduled for June 22, so the headphones could be released then, but Prosser said in a previous tweet that the new AirPods are ready to ship and "could launch anytime."
