Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Leak reveals launch timing — and it's faster than we thought

The Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4, the next-generation versions of Samsung's flagship wearables, could both be available soon.

According to a Twitter thread by informant Ice Universe, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4 are expected to launch in the second quarter of 2021. This means that Samsung may release its latest smartwatch models earlier than usual, like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, which debuted in August 2020.

If the successor model is indeed slated for release in the second quarter, it would appear between April and June. Nevertheless, it seems unusual for Samsung to release two new smartwatches less than a year after overhauling the original Samsung Galaxy Watch.

What is not so unusual is the names given to these rumored wearables. One could argue that it makes more sense to call the follow-up to Samsung's Galaxy Watch Active 2 the Galaxy Watch Active 3, but Samsung has been known to omit numbers to avoid confusion for shoppers. Thus, the latest smartwatch is called the Galaxy Watch 3, even though it is only the second lifestyle Galaxy Watch.

Samsung has never announced a Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active model side by side. Recent information suggests that the company is offering two new options to customers for the first time, just as Apple launched the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE together this fall.

The standard Galaxy Watch will likely get top-of-the-line features (including a rotating bezel, we hope), while the slimmer Galaxy Watch Active could be cheaper and more fitness-focused.

There is also no guarantee that Samsung will announce two different models anytime soon, as IceUniverse reports. The leaker has shared an equally questionable tweet that the upcoming Galaxy Watch will replace Tizen with Android. Their account has a solid track record regarding Samsung's information, but until we see more substantial evidence, the Galaxy Watch rumor should be taken with a grain of salt.
