LG's strange new TV roll rotates and comes with a built-in battery

LG is trying to compete with Samsung in a new way with its own line of design-oriented TVs that bring an artistic flair to the uniform smart TV world.LG's first Objet Collection TVs, named Objet and StanbyMe (not a typo, but the correct spelling). While these are definitely premium products, they bear no resemblance to the sets on our best TV list.

Officially numbered 65Art90 and 27Art10, Objet and StandbyMe are two very different approaches to traditional TV. The two new TVs, which will be unveiled at CES 2022 in Las Vegas, are part of LG's Objet collection of designer appliances, which already includes high-end devices for the kitchen and home. The new models take television design in two very different directions, but the emphasis on high-end design, high-quality materials and finishes, and personal use remains the same. [LG's first new lifestyle TV is the LG StanbyMe 27Art10, a 27-inch do-it-all display with a built-in stand on wheels and a built-in battery for truly wireless use anywhere in the house. This small display is intended for personal use by a single viewer in close proximity, rather than for viewing by multiple people as most modern televisions are designed to be.

Between its battery-powered mobility and versatile stand that can rotate, tilt, and adjust height, StanbyMe is envisioned to be used in the home for everything from TV viewing to video calls to virtual classroom lectures, etc. NFC tap-to-pair functionality and optional mobile phone cradle allows seamless screen mirroring with both Android and iOS phones. In addition to the standard remote control, touch and gesture controls are also available, making it much more hands-on than LG's usual smart TVs.

And as part of LG's lineup of lifestyle TVs, design is at the forefront, with a sleek white stand and matching beige fabric rear cover on the TV enclosure and a base that hides built-in wheels that allow the set to be easily moved around the house. The design is intended to be as comfortable in bed or at a desk as it is on a couch watching regular TV.

Between the easy NFC pairing and the rotating screen, the StanbyMe appears to compete most directly with the Samsung Sero, which also has an integrated stand and rotating display.

The LG Objet TV was created to conceal a large screen TV when not in use, exposing the 65" 4K TV underneath when the fabric cover is lowered and seamlessly blending into the most sophisticated room design when raised The TV screen can be hidden behind a panel of designer fabric.

Built to lean against the wall like art on an easel, the slim Objet 65Art90 has a built-in frame stand and a minimalist style that extends to TV cable management and streamlined design. The fabric cover is made by Danish textile company Kvadrat and comes in three colors (Kvadrat Beige, Kvadrat Redwood, and Kvadrat Green), each chosen to match and harmonize with a broad color palette.

Behind the cover, there is also a fairly high-performance TV: the Objet is a 65-inch OLED TV, similar to the Editor's Choice LG C1 OLED and the premium LG G1 OLED with a slimmer Gallery design that LG introduced with the LG G1 boasts the same advanced OLED evo technology. Paired with an advanced processor (it is unclear which processor, as it is part of LG's yet-to-be-announced 2022 lineup), the TV also features a powerful 80-watt 4.2-channel sound in a slim design.

It also borrows the "Line View" (LG's name for a screen mode that uses only the upper third of the display) feature from the very expensive LG rollable OLED, which has a fabric cover that is only partially retracted. In Line View mode, the TV can be used as a date and clock display or as an audio player without having to be turned on completely. The display can also display artwork when not in use for regular viewing, thanks to LG's Gallery Mode.

LG has not yet announced a release date or price for the LG Objet TV (model 65Art90) and LG StanbyME (model 27Art10), but plans to fully announce the new models at CES 2022 in Las Vegas.

According to an early report from sister site What Hi-Fi. the LG Objet TV will go on sale in Korea on December 15 at a price of 9.9 million won (about US$8,355). Meanwhile, the LG StanbyME has been available in Korea since July and is priced at 1.04 million won (US$877).

We'll see if LG makes any announcements about global sales when it unveils this TV at CES.
