There was no shortage of eye-popping announcements at Sony's PlayStation Showcase 2021, but you'll have to search long and hard to find a trailer as creative and mysterious as "Forspoken". Announced at PS5 launch last year under the working title "Project Athia," this stunningly gorgeous title by developer Luminous Productions has come a rather long way in the past year.
Scheduled for release in spring 2022 exclusively for PS5, "Forspoken" puts players in the role of a young girl named Frey, who is suddenly transported to the dangerous yet breathtaking world of Athia, where she must fight to survive. The array of magic available, the vast open world to explore, and the captivating story that unfolds are sure to put "Forspoken" at the top of the list of anticipated titles for 2022.
Here is what we know so far about Forspoken.
Publisher Square Enix has been tight-lipped about a specific release date for Forspoken. The game publisher has stated that it is aiming for a spring 2022 release, but there is still some time before that, and as has been the case with many games over the past year or so, a delay is not out of the question.
It is worth noting, however, that Luminous Productions does not appear to be working on any other games at the moment; focusing all of its attention on Forspoken may be a good sign that the game will meet its release window.
In March, we saw Forspoken's first official trailer since its first teaser in June 2020. In that trailer, we were introduced to Ella Balinska, who plays the main character Frey, and were told a bit about her role in the game. The gameplay that followed was very short and briefly introduced the scene where Frey comes face to face with a giant dragon.
And now, as part of Sony's PlayStation Showcase in September, a new trailer was released, showing Forspoken's fast movement, magical combat, and captivating story. We also get a glimpse into Frey's life in New York City.
The trailer offers a fair amount of combat gameplay and showcases some of the incredible magic Frey uses to fight off monsters. Water attacks and ice explosions are shown on screen, but there are also a few machine-gun-like magics that would look right at home in "Infamous."
Forspoken's scenarios have been used by Amg Hennig in "Uncharted," Gary Whitta in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," Allison Rymer in "Shadowhunters," Todd in "Devil Inside" Stashwick, and others, are some of the most talented writers in gaming and film. So far, the appointment of such big names seems to be paying off.
The game revolves around 20-year-old Frey Holland. Suddenly transported to the fantastical world of Atia, she is finally forced to step up and devote herself to finding a way out.
Frey's goal is to find and repel a group of very powerful patriarchs called the Tanta, but to do so, she must first traverse the vast lands of Atia. Along the journey, an awakening bracelet named Cuffe (voiced by Jonathan Cake) joins them, offering advice and help.
Renowned composer Bear McCreary (of "The Walking Dead" and "God of War" (2018) fame) has also teamed up with composer Gary Siman ("BioShock") to create a rousing score that will take players on awe-inspiring atia should help to further immerse them in the world of
Taking full advantage of the power of the PS5, Luminous Productions created Forspoken with the intention of producing the highest quality visuals in an open world game to date. And it does so while providing players with intense and fast-paced gameplay.
Frey runs at breakneck speed across the landscape of Atia, effortlessly running, leaping, flipping, and dashing everywhere. When he is not performing his incredible parkour feats, he uses a variety of magical spells to fight off giant beasts. From hurling exploding water balls to firing bullets from his hands, this third-person action title is certainly a sight to behold.
Forspoken looks to be one of the standout titles of 2022, and Luminous Productions, the talented team that previously worked on Final Fantasy XV, has assembled an impressive team of writers, actors, and composers to bring this will almost certainly bring this gorgeous adventure to life.
You may have to wait a while before you can get your hands on this epic fantasy title, but rest assured that from what we've seen so far, it should be well worth the wait. Look for its release in the first half of next year.
