Apple Watch7 battery life could be its biggest upgrade

The battery life of the Apple Watch 7 may be the key to making the best smartwatch even better. According to multiple tip sources, the upcoming refresh model will have a much improved battery compared to the previous generation.

Rather than focusing on new health and other features, the Apple Watch 7 will reportedly be redesigned both externally and internally. And especially in the casing, Apple may have succeeded in one of the substantial Apple Watch upgrades in daily use in recent years.

No longer is the Apple Watch rated for 18 hours, claims leaker Max Weinbach via his Pineleaks Twitter account. In a lengthy thread shared recently, Weinbach made the claim about the iPhone 13, AirPods 3, and Apple Watch 7. Apparently, Apple's flagship smartwatch will "see the first real battery life improvements."

The Apple Watch 6, Apple Watch SE, and all the best Apple Watch models are rated at 18 hours of battery life under normal use.

According to Apple, normal battery use for the Apple Watch 6 is 90 time checks per day, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app use, and a 60-minute workout with music playback via Bluetooth.

With the Apple Watch 5, Apple added an always-on display to the "normal use" parameter, but we have not witnessed a true extension to the company's battery estimate. At least in power reserve mode, the watch can be used for a full 24 hours. But the 18-hour battery life is as constant as the digital crown for Apple Watch users.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also mentioned earlier this year rumors of a double-sided system-in-package (SiP) that would free up space inside the Apple Watch, and mentioned improved battery life.

A smaller S7 chipset, coupled with a larger case, could give the Apple Watch the space it needs to prioritize the battery. the Apple Watch is said to expand in size from 40mm and 44mm to 41mm and 45mm, a major may not sound like a change, but millimeters on the wrist do make a difference.

With longer battery life, the Apple Watch opens up many possibilities. For one thing, it means that I no longer have to worry about forgetting my charger when I go on an overnight trip. I clasp this $10 charging accessory to my keychain so that my smartwatch is never without a charge, and if the Apple Watch doesn't record my steps, they don't count.

Connectivity could also benefit from the Apple Watch 7's improved battery life; calls and messages over LTE tend to put more strain on the Apple Watch than when it's connected to an iPhone. If the Apple Watch finds that it can support itself for an entire day then more people might be willing to pay for cellular communication.

I'd like to see the battery last two days. This is about the maximum estimated value for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, which is achievable depending on usage. At this rate, I'd be happy with a 24-hour warranty.

If you were wondering whether to wait for the Apple Watch 7 or buy the Apple Watch 6, the battery life alone is reason enough to hold out. I am optimistic that the main spec difference between the Apple Watch 7 and the Apple Watch 6 will be the estimated stamina. I can't say for sure, of course, but it will be worth the wait to find out, since the next Apple Event is only a few days away.
