Apple's iMac 2021 has already become a sleek machine after undergoing a major redesign recently, but it appears that Cupertino may be planning an even more minimalist look for future iMacs.

This is due to a patent recently granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office titled "Electronic Device with Glass Housing Member," which suggests that Apple may be considering a new, more ambitious design for a future iMac. The patent alludes to a sheet of curved glass that could potentially hold the iMac in the air in an L-shape instead of a traditional stand.

However, this would not be the first time we hear about this. The patent was originally filed in May 2019, finally hit the web around January 2020, and was approved just yesterday.

The L-shaped design showcases two flat pieces of glass, with the larger piece holding the display itself and allowing it to be attached to the back of the glass while acting as a protective screen.

The shorter portion acts as a stand for the device, where the Magic Keyboard, mouse, and trackpad can be placed. One could also (theoretically) put a MacBook through the larger slit and use the keyboard portion of the device as a dock.

The lower lip can also be supported by a wedge section for sturdy standing. Now, the main concern with this type of design would be its durability.

According to the patent, the wedge portion holds most of the heavier components so as to balance the weight of the display, which is supported by the larger glass portion. It also appears that the viewing angle of the screen could be adjusted by shifting the wedge.

While the above certainly sounds exciting, it should be noted that just because a company has a patent approved does not necessarily mean that its product is being built. Because of its track record, Apple is constantly filing many patents, and there is no guarantee that each patent will eventually lead to a new device.

However, looking back at the family tree of past iMacs, Apple has certainly come a long way.
