Windows 11 is scheduled for full release on October 5, and we expect new hardware to accompany the latest software update. After all, what better way to show off a great, rounded, centrally located operating system?

Microsoft has certainly chosen the time and place for such a showcase, and Microsoft will host an online event on Wednesday, September 22 at 11 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. PT to unveil the company's "next." Windows 11 and new devices are Special focus.

The event is open to anyone with access to a web browser, but accessing the event page now will only allow you to set a reminder to attend later; more details will be revealed as Windows 11 goes live.

But what will be on stage on September 22? Microsoft has announced very little so far, but we have some idea of what will be presented.

Let's start with the obvious agenda: Windows 11. Yes, Microsoft already previewed this OS update in June. But since it will be released on October 5, just a few weeks after Microsoft's September 22 event, it seems like a good time to remind those upgrading what they should expect.

Our Windows 11 guide has a complete overview of the changes we've seen. But highlights include a new Start menu with rounded corners, productivity boosters such as snap layouts for running multiple apps, new widgets, and Microsoft Teams integration.

Microsoft may talk about system requirements for the update, but probably won't spend much time on Windows 11 features. We believe the bulk of the September 22 event will focus on new hardware.

To that end, Microsoft may have played its cards close to the chest in promoting the September 22 event. The teaser image on the event page closely resembles a Surface laptop. This could be a hint that we will finally witness the unveiling of the Surface Book 4, which has been teased with a radical redesign that may include a hinged screen rather than the removable display seen on the 2020 Surface Book 3.

If this rumor comes to fruition, the upcoming Surface Book could be an attractive device for artists and creators looking for a 2-in-1 laptop/tablet that can be installed like an easel, like the Surface Studio 2.

We already expect to see the Surface Duo 2 debut later this year, and Microsoft's newly announced September Surface event seems like prime time for that to happen. We've already seen photos of this purported Surface Duo 2 circulating online, and they seem to reveal the same dual-screen clamshell design as the original Duo, albeit with an improved triple camera array.

If everything we are hearing proves true, this Duo 2 will have much better hardware than the original (underpowered) Duo, including a Snapdragon 888 processor, 5G support, and NFC communication for wireless payments Id.

It is worth pointing out, though, that the promotional image Microsoft is using to preview the event (shown at the beginning of this article) looks nothing like either of the rumored products. Instead, it is a stylized landscape shot of what appears to be a standard Surface Pro tablet, perhaps hinting that the long-anticipated Surface Pro 8 is finally on its way.

We'll just have to wait and see what Microsoft has planned for the Surface showcase on September 22. All of the above devices may make an appearance, or something completely unexpected may make an appearance. Either way, stay tuned for reports on all things Microsoft.
