It seems increasingly likely that the MacBook Pro 2021, which will feature the new M1X chip and is the subject of endless rumors, will appear this fall. Reliable informant Mark Gurman has indicated that a new MacBook Pro will appear in the "coming months."
Gurman noted this in his latest Power On newsletter, saying that Apple's transition to abandon Intel chips altogether and move to its own Apple silicon is set to be completed by the end of 2022. And it appears that the redesigned MacBook Pro, which is expected to come in 14- and 16-inch models, will lead the charge this fall.
Just a few weeks ago, Garman said that a MacBook Pro with M1X could appear between September and November. This would be logical since Apple frequently announces devices in the fall. Last year, the Apple Watch Series 6 and iPad Air debuted in September, followed a month later by the iPhone 12 series. This year, the iPhone 13 will be announced in September, and the new MacBook Pro and iPad mini 6 are also expected in the fall.
Rumors of the MacBook Pro 2021 have been around for some time; the MacBook Pro 2021 is said to use the M1X chip, a more powerful upgrade to the existing Apple M1 chip, and will be more for professional workloads than general computing It is expected to be a product for professional workloads rather than general computing.
Several recent reports suggest that Apple may adopt a Mini-LED display for the next MacBook Pro. This display could offer improved brightness, contrast, and color over the standard LCD panels used in the current MacBook Pro.
We have also seen reports of a possible design change, with reliable Apple leaker Ming-Chi Kuo saying, "The new model will cancel the curved design of the top and bottom parts of the existing model and adopt a flat edge form factor design," he claims. And other rumors point to the return of an SD card reader and HDMI port, both last seen on the 2015 MacBook Pro.
Last but not least, Apple is expected to adopt a new MagSafe charger for the two new MacBook Pros.
While the new MacBook Pro promises excitement for Apple Silicon in the short term, next year will undoubtedly be a bigger deal for Cupertino's chips.
Garman expects Apple to "barely meet the two-year timeline" before it moves away from Intel processors altogether. If that happens, however, it will reportedly debut "late next year" along with a new iMac and a "revamped, smaller Mac Pro."
The expected iMac could be a new Apple Silicon version of the 27-inch model that currently still has an Intel CPU. It is also possible that Apple's professional desktops will be handled by Apple Silicon, as it has been a while since we have seen a new Mac Pro. However, for Apple to compete with high-end desktop processors from Intel and AMD, it will need to offer serious power from a custom chip.
As it stands, we can expect to hear more about the next-generation MacBook Pro in September or October. And we wouldn't be surprised if Apple provided a few more details about the Apple Silicon roadmap and what we can expect in 2022.
