Update: The OnePlus Nord 2 has been released and the OnePlus Nord 2 Pac-Man Edition is now available.
The official release date for the OnePlus Nord 2 has been set for July 22.
The company confirmed the news with a tweet that simply read. #July22. The tweet linked to the official OnePlus Nord 2 landing page, where the company dropped a teaser about the device ahead of the official launch.
The July 22 date won't come as much of a surprise to OnePlus watchers. On Wednesday, the company's Indian site accidentally revealed the July 22 date first, then reverted the text back to "coming soon."
It is not clear whether July 22 simply refers to the date of the OnePlus unveiling event or the actual date of availability, but the company has recently left a slight gap between the announcement and the launch date: the OnePlus 9 was announced at a March 23 event and will be available for purchase from April 1, and more recently the OnePlus Nord CE became available for purchase 11 days after it was announced on June 10. [It is a bit surprising that the OnePlus Nord 2 was announced so soon after the OnePlus Nord CE (the "core edition" of the original OnePlus Nord). However, the company is taking a new direction with the upcoming device.
OnePlus has already confirmed that the Nord 2 will use MediaTek's Dimensity 1200-AI chip over Qualcomm, which OnePlus says uses AI to improve image and video quality on the new phone, with photos promises automatic color and contrast adjustments, and there appears to be a feature called AI Resolution Boost that boosts video resolution.
It will be interesting to see how these promises are realized and how this phone fares against other phones in the same price range that choose a Snapdragon SoC instead.
The 6.4-inch FHD AMOLED flat screen with 90Hz refresh rate and punch-hole selfie camera has a plain plastic back with a rectangular camera bump in the upper left corner.
The Nord 2 will have only three rear cameras and may not have a depth or macro sensor. According to leaked Nord 2 specs, the main sensor will be raised to 50 MP and will use the same Sony IMX766 sensor found on the OnePlus 9 Pro. Battery capacity will jump from 4,115 mAh to 4,500 mAh and could feature 65W charging, but the jury is out on that.
This price point is, of course, undecided at this time, but the original OnePlus Nord cost £379/469 when it launched last year (about $522/646, though it was not released in the US). The Core Edition, which retains the "core" specs but drops the price, launched last month for £299 (~$412), so it will be interesting to see where OnePlus places the Nord 2 relative to these two models and the $729 OnePlus 9 when it is officially announced in 12 days It will be interesting to see where OnePlus positions the Nord 2 relative to these two models and the $729 OnePlus 9 when it is officially announced in 12 days.
