Apple TV Plus wakes up again for "The Morning Show" Season 2. The Apple TV Plus drama returns for more cutthroat action behind the scenes of the fictional morning news show (which seems to be based pretty much on The Today Show). A teaser trailer for Season 2 of "The Morning Show" was recently released, teasing a major storyline that will see Alex Levy leave the network and Bradley Jackson get a new co-host.
"The Morning Show" follows the breakfast show's on- and off-camera employees. Alex (Aniston) is a perennial screen favorite whose co-anchor Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) is dishonorably fired. Soon Bradley (Witherspoon) replaces him and begins investigating Mitch's abuse of his colleagues.
At the end of "The Morning Show" Season 1, Alex and Bradley surprised viewers (and network bosses) by exposing UBA's toxic workplace and the top management cover-up of Mitch's sexual misconduct.
In Season 2, Alex leaves the morning show, leaving Bradley to pick up the pieces; UBA executive Corey Ellison (Billy Claddap) tries to bring Alex back, but the network also hires a new co-host. Meanwhile, Alex and Mitch each bring their stories to other media outlets.
Season 2 will include a coronavirus pandemic. Director Mimi Lederer told GoldDerby.com, "We are a morning show about the evils of the world, racism, injustice, and other things that are as light as a morning show. And we incorporated COVID, just as the morning show did."
Here's what we know so far about "The Morning Show" Season 2.
Apple TV Plus has set a release date of Friday, September 17 for Morning Show Season 2.
Interestingly, that is the same weekend as the 2021 Emmy Awards. However, The Morning Show is not eligible for nominations, as Season 1 was already nominated for an Emmy last year. Cladap won for Outstanding Supporting Actor - Drama.
Season 2 of The Morning Show was originally scheduled for November 2020, but was delayed due to production delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Season 2 of The Morning Show will consist of 10 episodes and will be released every Friday.
Apple TV Plus recently dropped a teaser trailer for Morning Show Season 2 along with the release date announcement.
The two-minute clip begins with a bombshell dropped by Alex and Bradley and builds to an aftermath set to an impressive cover of Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York." Alex is hiding out in a cabin after leaving the show. She adamantly refuses. Meanwhile, Bradley is furious that Alex has abandoned him.
The teaser trailer also features new characters, including Bradley's new co-anchor and a news magazine journalist played by Juliana Margulies.
The Morning Show Season 2 will be led by its two leads, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Aniston is Alex Levy, longtime co-host of UBA's morning show. Witherspoon plays Bradley Jackson, a local news field reporter chosen to be Alex's co-anchor.
They join:
"The Morning Show" Season 2 adds several new faces. Julianna Margulies will play UBA's esteemed anchor, Laura Peterson.
"Laura got her start on shows like 'Dateline,'" showrunner Kelly Ehling told EW.com. 'She's a UBA star and a Diane Sawyer-level icon. We wanted to create someone who would be a mentor to [Witherspoon's character] Bradley and do things differently."
Hasan Minhaj plays Eric Nomani, who is described as "a charismatic rising star joining the morning show team." In the teaser trailer, he appears to be Bradley's new co-host.
Emmy Award winner Holland Taylor plays UBA board chair Cybill Richards.
Other new cast members on the morning show include: Greta Lee as tech company founder Stella Bak; Ruairi O'Connor as YouTuber Ty Fitzgerald; Tara Kashan as news producer Gail Berman; and Valeria Golino as documentary filmmaker Paola Lambruschini.
