"Loki" is not just a new Disney Plus show for audiences who can't get enough of Tom Hiddleston. Because of the huge success of its premiere, Disney has decided to change things up.
A week after the premiere of "Loki" Episode 1, Disney learned that all new original programming would air on Wednesdays. That's right, Friday is over and Wednesday is starting. The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which reports that the Monsters, Inc. series "Monsters at Work" (moved to July 7, previously July 2) and the live-action "Turner & Hooch" series (moved to July 21, previously July 16) are moving reportedly.
So how did this happen? Disney seems to be following the success of the "Loki" series, which CEO Bob Chapek (via IGN) said was "the most watched premiere [episode] on Disney+ in its opening week." Nevertheless, Disney Plus (like most streaming services) does not publish actual audience figures.
What does this mean for us, except that Wednesday night will be Disney Plus night (or Disney Plus morning, to avoid spoilers)? It doesn't mean much.
This makes sense, since Disney's movie business is returning to normal and its original content is really starting to provide a steady stream of releases; in 2021, "Ms. Marvel," "Hawkeye," and "What If..." will air along with non-Marvel Disney Plus programming, and THR's sources corroborate this, saying, "This shift is designed to accommodate the growing amount of original content. [This makes sense since "The Black Widow," "The Legend of the Incense Princess and the Ten Rings," "The Eternals," and many other feature films will be released on Friday. It is not hard to imagine Disney thinking that these films will attract attention. It would probably also help their marketing strategy to schedule ad buys before their debut.
And Disney is not the only one releasing content. Moving the show to Wednesdays means it won't be competing with other movies and larger shows from Netflix, Hulu, etc.
As for the rest of the week? Thursdays are shared by HBO Max, Peacock, and Paramount Plus.
