EDITOR'S NOTE: The Dell G15 was honored with a "Highly Commended" award for Best Budget Gaming Laptop in the Gaming category of the Tom's Guide Awards 2021.

Today, the Dell team announced two new additions to its lineup of gaming laptops. The revamped Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 and the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition, both featuring Nvidia GPUs and AMD Ryzen CPUs.

The G15 Ryzen Edition is the more affordable of the two and is a 15" with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series laptop GPU, up to an AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPU, and 3200Mhz DD4 memory that you can upgrade yourself. laptop.

Dell plans to sell the G15 Ryzen Edition in the U.S. starting May 4, and another G15 model with a 10th generation Intel CPU will be available on May 13. Both models will start at $899.99.

Dell's new G15 is touted as a sleek, budget-friendly gaming laptop with a narrow bezel and what the company describes as an "Alienware-inspired thermal design" intended to dissipate heat effectively by maximizing airflow.

The G15 will be available at launch in a dark shadow gray finish as well as two speckled finishes (one in Spectre Green and the other in Phantom Gray). Dell will begin offering a fourth finish, the elusive Obsidian Black laptop, later this year.

The new G15 will also feature the Game Shift key, which is built into Dell's G-series of gaming laptops.

If you prefer backlit keys, the G15 will offer two upgrade options to the standard full-size keyboard: one with orange backlighting with special emphasis on WASD, and the other with a customizable 4-zone RGB backlit keyboard.

The new G15 ships with a 1920 x 1080 Full HD LED display with 250 nits of brightness and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Those seeking higher performance can upgrade to an improved model that boasts 300 nits of brightness at a 165 Hz refresh rate, but it is not yet known how much that upgrade will cost or whether it will affect battery life.

As for connectivity, the Dell G15 has one HDMI 2.1 port, one USB 3.2 port, one USB-C port (with DisplayPort alt-mode), two USB 2.0 ports (one with PowerShare), and a headset/microphone jack, Ethernet (RJ45) port will be shipped.

The entry-level G15 will be powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 5600H hexa-core CPU with the option to upgrade to an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H octa-core processor for an undisclosed price.

If you want an Intel chip in your new G15, you will have to wait until these models start shipping on April 13 and not one of the new 11th generation models to get a 10th generation Intel CPU (Core-i5 quad-core or Core-i7 octa-core CPU (either of the two) will be available.

As for graphical processing power, according to Dell, the G15 will be powered by an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 or RTX 30 series GPU, with up to 6GB of GDDR6 memory and a GeForce RTX 3060. This means that even the entry-level G15 can be expected to produce respectable numbers in terms of CPU/GPU performance, but we will have to wait for more in-depth testing to know for sure.

Dell expects to sell the G15 Ryzen Edition with a 56 Whr 3-cell battery or a larger 86 Wh 6-cell battery. Entry-level models are expected to have the 3-cell battery, but Dell says the larger 6-cell battery will be optional/required for some of the more high-powered CPU/GPU configurations.

The company has not (yet) stated how many hours the G15 can last on battery power, but we look forward to testing it against our own battery benchmarks.

The laptops we've tested in Dell's G series have offered respectable performance and screen quality at affordable prices, and the new G15 looks to live up to that reputation. AMD's new 5000 series Ryzen CPUs have received high praise in recent years.
