Apple has updated the trade-in value of several products, reducing the amount you can receive for most items.
Starting today, you can trade in your iPad Pro for a small increase in value. This also applies to the iPhone 11 and iPhone 6S Plus. However, for everything else, including MacBooks, MacBook Airs, iMacs, and Mac minis, the value is down from a week ago.
According to MacRumors, the last time Apple updated trade-in prices was last December; in December, just like this weekend, iPads rose in value and Macs fell, perhaps a sign that demand for iPads over Macs is growing worldwide. Furthermore, the high demand for chips, which may cause an iPad shortage in the near future, will only make things worse this upcoming holiday season.
The convenience of trading in a device directly to Apple may not be worth it for everyone. In many cases, users may get a better return by selling their gear on sites like eBay or Facebook Marketplace. However, users must deal with the hassles of negotiating prices and shipping the device. A used 64GB iPhone 11 Pro Max usually sells for around $669 on eBay. Of course, this does not include shipping and eBay fees. However, the iPhone 11 Pro Max can sell for $700 or more. From what Apple is offering, this is only $500.
Apple also allows customers to trade in certain Android devices. The Samsung Galaxy S20+, released last year, costs just $305. Unfortunately, if you want to trade in a laptop other than a MacBook, Apple tells you to recycle the device instead. The relatively new Microsoft Surface Pro should not be recycled, but sold elsewhere.
