Update: This article has been updated to reflect a statement from Microsoft.
Unfortunately, Microsoft is not looking to bring virtual reality headset support to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with a spokesperson telling VGC: "VR for consoles is not our focus at this time."
A spokesperson told VGC: "VR for consoles is not our focus at this time.
IGN Italia reported that when it came to installing the new Xbox wireless headset on the Xbox Series X, a message translated in Italian popped up: "An update for the VR headset is available. This made us wonder if Microsoft intended to introduce support for VR headsets in their new game consoles. However, it appears that it was simply an error in messaging.
"The copy of this error message is inaccurate due to a localization bug," a spokesperson said.
The mistake was apparently not just a typo, as additional text in the pop-up message also asks Xbox Series X and Series S users to "update your VR headset."
When we first reported this, we speculated that the message might be a simple mistake on Microsoft's part. We had rather hoped otherwise and that VR headset support could indeed be on the horizon for the Xbox Series X, but sadly that seems unlikely.
As it stands, there is no VR headset support for the new Xbox consoles, nor for the older Xbox One. However, Windows 10 has its own Mixed Reality system and has long supported a variety of VR headsets and platforms. In other words, it would not be a huge leap to see VR headset support coming to the Xbox Series X.
The topic of VR and Xbox support has been simmering for some time, and UploadVR reported that Xbox boss Phil Spencer said ahead of the launch of the next Xbox console that he hoped VR support on Xbox would be "a given." However, Spencer also stated that there would be no VR support at the launch of the Xbox Series X, so it never happened.
Unfortunately, the latter seems to be the case, even though support for one of our picks for the best VR headset could be a cakewalk for Microsoft.
