Apple's iPhone Flip may still be a rumor, but that hasn't stopped the company from coming up with a concept design that suggests a different approach to the foldable phone we've come to expect. Instead of a clamshell design that flips open to reveal an extended screen, what about an iPhone that folds like a book?
That's the argument put forward by YouTube creator Svyatoslav Alexandrov anyway; Alexandrov has created an iPhone concept video for a mythical product called iPhone Fold.
Alexandrov makes a compelling case for a folio-like iPhone in which the outer 6.3-inch screen unfolds to reveal an 8-inch foldable screen on the inside. It means letting it expand like a larger iPad mini, still usable as a portable device but large enough to be used as a tablet.
The video shows a sophisticated iPhone concept: instead of relying on FaceID, it uses TouchID and uses the primary screen as support for an embedded fingerprint sensor to quickly unlock the phone. As for cameras, the foldable iPhone will feature a selfie camera on the front and a triple camera array on the back, similar to the iPhone 12 Pro.
The setup would also include a state-of-the-art LiDAR scanner, an improvement over the one found on the latest iPhone Pro models. Alexandrov seems to have decided to reduce the overall size of the notch on the outer screen, possibly in favor of TouchID instead, and only one front-facing camera.
The concept is compatible with MagSafe and supports 5G, but Alexandrov did not dream up any additional details, such as whether the Apple Pencil would work or what kind of hinge would support a foldable display. However, the iPhone Fold features teased in the video include an A15 processor (the chipset that is expected to power this fall's iPhone), an under-display camera on an 8-inch screen, four surround speakers, and five different color options
The iPhone will be available in a variety of colors.
The iPhone has already undergone various advancements, replacing thin edges with thicker edges, adopting MagSafe charging technology, and improving the camera. It will probably not be ready for the iPhone 13 release this fall. Reportedly, whatever foldable Apple is working on, be it the iPhone Flip or Fold, will not appear until 2022. Still, that leaves us enough time to speculate about how Apple could approach the foldable phone and chip away at Samsung's dominance in this segment of the smartphone market.
