With just three days to go until the iPhone 14's official unveiling, well-connected Bloomberg reporter Mark Garman has revealed some details of what to expect from Apple's next flagship smartphone.
In the final issue of his Power On newsletter (opens in new tab) before the 'Far Out' Apple September event kicks off in Cupertino on Wednesday, Garman rounded up the iPhone 14 rumors, which we are all pretty familiar with at this point, but the last few highlighting a couple of points that haven't received much attention in recent weeks.
The first, according to Gurman, is that for the second year in a row, the iPhone Pro model will have increased battery capacity." Beyond the notch, iPhone 14 Pro models are told to expect to look slightly larger overall and include slimmer bezels," he wrote.
"The battery will also be larger.
This is interesting because we had previously heard that all iPhone 14 models would be larger, and Gurman suggests that both high-end models will have increased capacity (which can be explained by efficiency improvements, as opposed to run time) and that this is unique to the Pro line This seems to be unique to the Pro line.
The second point, less specific but equally interesting, concerns the SIM card slot.
"Apple is pushing eSIM more strongly this time around, and carriers are preparing to direct users to digitally embedded SIM cards rather than physical SIM cards," Garman writes. Indeed, "Apple is considering getting rid of the physical SIM card slot altogether on some models starting this year or next.
This is not the first time we have heard about this, and it is said that eliminating the SIM card slot was Apple's ambition and goal to create a completely portless iPhone. However, given that Garman says it is still in the "consideration" stage, it is likely that this is for the iPhone 15. Alternatively, it could be a redesigned version of the iPhone 14 for some markets.
If not, Gurman says what we can expect from the iPhone 14 Pro: upgraded 48-megapixel sensor, improved ultra-wide-angle photos, front-facing camera autofocus, improved facial recognition, and the power of the A16 chip, which we now hear so much about. Repeatedly.
The regular iPhone 14 was relatively uncommented upon, with only "some camera hardware changes" mooted, suggesting that this will be a more incremental upgrade for those not going Pro. If so, there are good arguments for buying the iPhone 13 Pro instead, but we'll know for sure on Wednesday when Apple finally lifts its head on the phone as well as the Apple Watch 8 and potentially the AirPods Pro 2.
