Even the best streaming services regularly drop popular movies and TV shows, and in recent months HBO Max's content library has lost some real hits. And the situation is about to get even worse with the confirmation that two DC animated shows will be exiting in the next 24 hours.
Justice League Unlimited is often considered one of the best superhero shows of all time, but streaming this beloved animated series is about to get a little more difficult as it is set to be removed from HBO Max soon.
The show will leave the streaming service as part of a library refresh at the end of the month, and with this content exodus, both seasons of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" will also be saying goodbye. But the real hardship for comic book fans will be the loss of "Justice League Unlimited."
Debuting in July 2004, "Justice League Unlimited" is considered the conclusion of the DC Animated Universe, which began with "Batman: The Animated Series" in 1992. It brought together characters from multiple DC shows, including Batman Beyond, Superman: The Animated Series and its predecessor Justice League Series. Upon its initial release, it received fairly universal acclaim for its screenplay and voice acting, which are most often singled out for praise.
Over three seasons and a total of 39 episodes, this incarnation of the Justice League defended the universe from a wide variety of villains and also dealt with internal League politics and interpersonal issues. To this day, it is considered a groundbreaking superhero show and arguably the best on-screen iteration of the Justice League ever.
Its removal from HBO Max is a real shame and has considerably weakened its offerings for superhero fans. The loss of Batman: The Brave and the Bold will also be felt by dedicated DC fans.
The animated Bat show ran from 2008 to 2011 and was primarily about Batman teaming up with various other heroes to fight crime and foil supervillain conspiracies. Overall, it was a fun show, but its light tone did not resonate at all with older viewers. Also, if faced with unflattering comparisons to "Batman: The Animated Series."
Both of these shows are leaving HBO Max tomorrow (Tuesday, January 31), along with a number of popular films, including the first two "Fantastic Beasts" films, the entire "John Wick" trilogy, and Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" The full list of films leaving HBO Max this month can be found at Collider (opens in new tab).
It is unclear if these latest removals are related to the larger content purge that HBO Max has endured in recent months. The streaming service has lost several original series following the merger of HBO Max and Discovery Plus this spring.
However, the loss of "Justice League Unlimited" and "Batman: Brave and the Bold" may be just a classic case of library churn for streaming services; Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount Plus, and other rival services regularly experience the same thing.
