Apple has announced the long-rumored MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. Not only do these new laptops promise to be Apple's most powerful notebooks ever, but they should also have amazing battery life thanks to the new processors.

While the MacBook Pro 16-inch features Apple's new silicon, the design remains unchanged from the 2021 MacBook Pro 16-inch (pictured above): MagSafe support, HDMI port and SD card slot, gorgeous mini LED display, we were generally happy with this design, so this is not an issue.

Here's everything you need to know about the new 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The new 16-inch MacBook Pro can be ordered from the Apple Store (opens in new tab) starting at $2,499. This configuration comes with an M2 Pro chip, 16GB of RAM, and 516GB of storage.

The most luxurious version costs $3,499 and comes with an M2 Max chip, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. All new MacBook Pro models can be upgraded to add RAM and memory, but this will add significantly to the price.

The new MacBook Pro will begin shipping on January 24.

Below is a table that categorizes how the 14" and 16" specs of the 2023 MacBook Pro and its predecessor, the 2021 MacBook Pro, differ. As you can see, there are few differences other than the hood upgrade.

The new MacBook Pro has a new M2 Pro chip and M2 Max chip, but the overall design remains largely the same.

Like its predecessor, the 16-inch MacBook Pro has a 16.2-inch mini LED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, a top cutout with a 1080p webcam, a Magic Keyboard without a Touch Bar, Apple's usual s spacious trackpad and a six-speaker sound system. On the periphery, there are numerous ports, including three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and finally a MagSafe connector for fast charging.

The main attraction of the new MacBook Pro 16-inch is the choice of M2 Pro or M2 Max chips.

The M2 Pro chip features a 10- or 12-core CPU with up to eight high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, which Apple claims offers a 20 percent performance boost over the M1 Pro. The new chip has a unified memory bandwidth of 200 GB/s, double that of the base M2 chip, and can accommodate up to 32 GB of RAM. According to Apple, the chip's 19-core GPU improves graphics performance by up to 30 percent, and the Neural Engine is 40 percent faster.

The M2 Max chip has up to 38-core GPUs and, according to Apple, up to 30 percent better graphics performance than the M1 Max. It also has 400 GB/s of unified memory bandwidth; the M2 Max chip can be configured with up to 96 GB of RAM for those who need as much power as possible in Apple's premium notebooks. Apple claims that the chip is 20% faster than its predecessors. This is especially true because the performance of the M1 Pro and M1 Max in the 2021 MacBook Pro was underwhelming.

Battery life could be a major selling point for both laptops in the new MacBook Pro.

According to Apple, the MacBook Pro 16-inch is capable of 22 hours of movie playback and 15 hours of web surfing. We plan to put both the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros through benchmark testing, but if these claims are accurate, either or both of these laptops could beat last year's MacBook Pro 13-inch, which lasted over 18 hours.

Both the new MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch have the same design as the 2021 models, but the power boost from the new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips should make them very performant machines. Obviously, each device will need to be tested in a test lab to see how much faster it is compared to the older models, but based on Apple's claims, these should be the most enhanced MacBooks to date.
