The upcoming Google Pixel Watch could get a proper battery upgrade by replacing the Samsung Exynos chip with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon W5 Plus silicon.
This is according to an unattended source at 9to5Google, which says that the Pixel Watch 2 will drop the 10-nanometer Samsung Exynos 9110 (which was somewhat outdated when the smartwatch launched in fall 2022) for a wearable that uses a 4nm process node It will be replaced by the latest Snapdragon chip for wearables. In basic terms, the smaller the process node, the more transistors can be put on the chip, resulting in better performance and efficiency.
As a result, the second-generation Pixel Watch is expected to not only outperform its predecessor, but also be more power efficient and have longer battery life. Ideally, I would like to be able to use it for at least a day.
While I rather like the Pixel Watch for its simple look and clean design, I can't deny that battery life is an unimpressive area. I don't use the fitness features much and prefer my smartwatch to be an actual watch as well as a notification machine and step counter.
However, despite not using the Watch to its full potential, after using it for most of the day, I still find the Watch running out of breath due to lack of power. When I am at home, this is not a major problem as I keep the charger conveniently located by my desk and keep it charged overnight. However, on overnight trips, such as the one I recently "broke" on my Panasonic Toughbook 40, I am forced to choose between carrying a separate charger or using a conventional watch, which is inconvenient.
Also, for those who want to use sleep tracking, a smartwatch whose battery runs out before bedtime is not ideal. Therefore, improved battery life could be one of the major benefits for the Pixel Watch 2.
That said, we would like to see other features, such as a built-in skin temperature sensor. This is something that the Fitbit Sense 2 has, and it makes sense that Google would include it in the next Watch.
It would also be nice to see improved tracking of health indicators. Personally, I would like to see the Pixel Watch slimmed down a bit and the display bezel trimmed off, which is visible if you look for it.
The Pixel Watch 2 is expected to debut alongside the also rumored Google Pixel 8.
