The new Netflix series "Fubar," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, may be well received by Netflix customers, but critics are up in arms about its Judgment Day. In a situation that seems all too familiar, the latest top Netflix original show has been heavily criticized by critics.
"Fubar," which debuted last Thursday (May 25), immediately vaulted to the top of Netflix's list of the top 10 shows in the country, according to FlixPatrol. And the streaming service's tracker indicates that Arnie's new series has held its spot ever since, with Netflix still holding the #1 spot as of this writing.
It is not at all surprising, as it seems to be a recent standard for comedic action series to generate controversy. But popularity does not equal quality, so here's everything you need to know about "Fubar," which is unlikely to be Netflix's best show.
Imagine Luke (Schwarzenegger) with spy skills on both feet. Not only is Luke (Schwarzenegger) a father who is also a butt spy, but his daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) is not far from the family tree.
Luke learns this fact on a mission to rescue a missing spy, but the spy is a foul-mouthed daughter. Emma, however, refuses to be treated like a child by her father and continues on her mission when he tracks her down.
Meanwhile, Luke and Emma really don't get along. Luke doesn't want to see her as an adult, because he clearly wants to see her as a grown-up, and the two eventually work together through some team-building time. Yes, it's basically "True Lives 2023".
At the time of its release, "Fubar" had a Rotten Tomatoes score of 49%. Audiences gave it a much higher rating of 71%.
USA Today's Kelly Lawler dismisses "Fubar" as "an embarrassment" that is "full of clichés, followed by painful cringes, and concluded with a stupefying mess." And she also slams the film with a ChatGPT-esque indictment, saying, "It's spoken by a human being, but I don't think a human being wrote the dialogue."
CNN's Brian Lowry said that "there is a nagging been-there quality to almost every beat of this show" and that "with apologies to the military abbreviation, [Fubar] feels spoiled in an almost recognizable way."
Dan Einav of the Financial Times was less harsh on Fubar, saying, "It's a fun, fundamentally unserious, world-saving romp with shaving thrills, a nonsensical plot, and easy comic relief. But that's all it is."
He wrote.
More positive comments from viewers came from people like Stewart l I can't wait to see season 2." Jose Manuel R. wrote, "The show is like a slap in the face that tells you that the 'critics' don't know what fun is. Nothing deep or groundbreaking, but a fun comedy/action show."
This seems pretty simple. If you're looking for an action comedy series to watch while you're doing something else, like folding laundry, "Fubar" is a good choice.
However, if you are looking for something more engaging to watch on TV and want to lean back and pay attention to every word, Fubar may not be for you.
