Turn up the tension dial on Cher Horowitz and you'll find Tracy Flick, the unscrupulous student body president candidate played to the hilt by Reese Witherspoon. Many subsequent films have turned the school election plot into a cliché, but this is still a battle worth capturing.

"Election," released four years after "Clueless," furthers its over-the-top cliché and has some truly outrageous moments. Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick play Jim McAllister, the dreamy teen character from the classic 80s film "Ferris Bueller." Whether you're seeing "Election" for the first time or for the first time in a while, you're guaranteed to be surprised by the twist and turns along the way. [Natasha Lyonne, Claire Duval, and Michelle Williams star in this powerful comedy. Lyonne plays Megan, a cheerleader whose friends and family think she is a lesbian. They send her to a camp called "True Directions" to straighten her out.

Lyonne's performance draws us in when Megan comes to a major realization about herself; "But I'm a Cheerleader," released in 1999 like "Election," is a much edgier film than "Clueless," but the two films together The 90s move fast.

John Hughes' masterpiece features the ultimate 80s ensemble cast of Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, and Anthony Michael Hall. They are "brains, athletes, basket cases, princesses, and criminals" who get together for high school detention. But over the course of the day, they forge an incredible connection.

"Clueless" is much more ebullient and airheaded than the aloof, Gen Y humor of "The Breakfast Club," but they are still a perfect pair. Ultimately, "The Breakfast Club" remains one of the most extraordinary stories in the teen movie canon.

In "Can't Buy Love," Patrick Dempsey is adorable as Ronald Miller, a nerd desperate to shine. To boost his status, Ronald pays a popular blonde named Cindy Mancini (Amanda Peterson) $1,000 to pretend to be his girlfriend.

Of course, Can't Buy Me Love is not the crowning achievement of Dempsey's long career, but it is certainly a fun film to watch now. The performance by the then 12-year-old Seth Green as Ronald's witty younger brother Chucky is also a delight. And the soundtrack is truly eclectic, ranging from soul sensation Atlantic Star and fragile British pop band Curiosity Killed the Cat to timeless punk-pop OG Billy Idol.
