Just as YouTube TV takes on local networks, it also takes on other networks. In the aftermath of sports networks SNY (for Mets and Jets fans, for example) leaving the streaming TV service, there is good news for YouTube TV subscribers.
The update comes from Cord Cutter News, which reports that a deal between YouTube TV and The CW's parent company, Nexstar Media Group, Inc. is nearing completion, with a new round of channels coming Friday (June 30). One of the largest networks is Chicago's WGN, which will expand its list of YouTube TV channels this week.
Nexstar announced a deal in March to extend contracts for certain channels, adding 59 channels. The agreement adds a total of 59 new Nexstar affiliates to YouTube TV, including 29 on The CW, 26 on MyNetworkTV, and four independents (Chicago, Washington D.C., Oklahoma City, and Baton Rouge).
In addition to WGN and San Francisco's KRON4, many of the CW affiliates have already begun live broadcasts. This week we will discuss MyNetworkTV and independent affiliates.
This news is probably best for those who need access to local news, as the end of the Arrow-verse and the season 7 series finale of "Riverdale" in August are changing the CW's place in the television landscape. Currently, the most prominent CW content may be LIV Golf, a golf league owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which recently partnered with the PGA.
YouTube TV is one of the best cable TV alternatives, but it's still stuck in the shadow of April's $8/month price hike due to streamer glitches during the NBA Finals.
Not only is YouTube TV trying to add channels whenever possible, but its big new feature, Multiview, is still rolling out and expanding. Recently, YouTube TV upgraded its ability to watch multiple channels at once by adding a non-sports option. This feature (which is limited to Apple TV boxes, but only Fubo offers it) still requires the ability to pick and choose which channels to watch at once, not just the set that YouTube TV offers.
