With the holiday season over and the New Year officially upon us, January is a chance for everyone to get a fresh start and rework new goals for the year. If your 2024 resolutions are to watch new and great shows, you'll want to check out what HBO and Max have to offer this month.
Jodie Foster and Kari Reis star in True Detective: Night Country, the fourth season of the captivating series. The entire season was written and directed by Issa Lopez. Meanwhile, check out Max's original documentaries, including "On the Roam" and "Going to Mars. In addition, a number of shows will be rebroadcast, including the third and final season of "Sort Of," "Real Time With Bill Maher," and the hit animated comedy for adults "Rick and Morty."
In addition, you will also have access to the myriad of movies and shows added to the streaming service this month. Here are some of the films that will be available on Max this month, as well as those that will no longer be available.
On January 8, you can see another HBO/Max original documentary, Going to Mars: Nicky Giovanni. This film highlights the remarkable life and legacy of one of America's greatest poets and activists, Nicky Giovanni. Using creative renderings of her poetry, historical footage, live poetry readings, and personal memories, the film encourages viewers to look toward a more equal future.
The documentary has already received excellent reviews since its debut at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The film won the Grand Jury Prize for Best U.S. Documentary at the same festival. It has also been nominated for three Cinema Eye Honors Awards and was selected for the Spotlight section of the 61st New York Film Festival. It is no wonder, then, that this film transcends the boundaries of the traditional interview-style documentary and engages the viewer in an intelligent and imaginative engagement.

The True Detective anthology series returns with a new series titled True Detective: Night Country Jodie Foster and Kari Reyes investigate the disappearance of eight men who manage the Tsaral Arctic Research Station. The cast stars as two detectives investigating the disappearance of the men. Detective Liz Danvers, played by Foster, and Evangeline Navarro, played by Reyes, face their own inner darkness as they get to the bottom of the case.
The setting of Ennis, Alaska, during the winter months when the sun never appears in that region, is sure to enhance this dark battle, written and directed by Issa Lopez, best known for her 2017 film "Tigers Are Not Afraid." It is a deliberate nod to Foster and her unforgettable performance. Lopez's contribution to the series will be one-of-a-kind, making this a season not to be missed.
Premieres January 14 on Max
If you can't get enough of Jason Momoa, I recommend watching his eight-part documentary series entitled On the Roam. He travels the United States in search of artists and other talents who have perfected their craft. Momoa features men and women who are forging their own paths through their passions, from craftsmen to motorcycle builders, musicians to athletes.
In addition to appearing in the series, Momoa also serves as executive producer along with Brian Andrew Mendoza. They have teamed up on countless projects, including "The Crime" and "Sweet Girl," and this series is sure to be another rewarding shoot. There is no doubt that people will be inspired by this series, especially when they see it spotlighting people who have taken an off-the-beaten path, as Momoa did. For those looking for inspiration, this is the perfect show for the New Year.
