Details of the Samsung Galaxy S24's AI photo and video capabilities have leaked, giving us a hint of how Samsung's new flagship smartphone will improve photography. And these AI upgrades could help Samsung overtake the mighty iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The latest information focuses primarily on AI camera features. Established leaker @UniverseIce on X reported that the Galaxy S24's 200MP camera may include a feature called AI optimization. The feature is said to be able to identify 12 different objects and optimize them for better image quality. However, there is no indication of what these objects are or how broad the selection options are.
Meanwhile, another leaker, @BennettBuhner, has compiled a list of potential features for the One UI 6.1 update. According to this leak, several exclusive features are likely to be updated, including the ability to erase subjects from videos. Presumably, the user would simply select a subject and the AI would remove that subject from each frame of the video.
In theory, this could be combined with a potential AI processing system for photos. This feature would presumably "improve low light performance, reduce grain, improve stability and exposure, etc." It has been suggested that this processing system will also include other features, but it is not clear at this time what they might be.
The leaked information also mentions other new features that will be added to the One UI 6.1 update. One of the most interesting is the inclusion of an AI chatbot on the device and a potential AI feature to retrieve important information from calls. This call feature would allow AI to gather certain information and provide users with options such as creating to-do lists or setting date reminders. While this is an interesting feature, it would need to be a feature that requires activation, as turning it on from the start could raise privacy concerns.
The submission also confirms the previously reported battery protection upgrades, including several new charging options that will help improve battery life on the S24 lineup. In particular, the improved Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip promises upgraded power-saving features over the previous model.
The post also confirms other rumors we have heard, including the ability to compile notes, expand photo borders, and translate during calls.
Note that many of these features may change or become unavailable upon release; there are still some questions about the AI features of the Galaxy S24 and One UI 6.1. The most pressing of these is whether Samsung will be able to lock more powerful features behind a pay wall.
We will know more in the new year, with the next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked rumored to be set around mid-January.
