While the prospect of an OLED display on the iPad Pro 2024 has been highlighted, there are many other upgrades we would like to see. One of them is MagSafe, and MacRumors claims to have heard that Apple's magnetic wireless charging may be coming to the iPad next year.
Apparently the news comes from "sources familiar with companies that manufacture magnets for Apple products." While this may be exciting, this rumor is no guarantee that it will actually happen; we have been disappointed many times in the past when it comes to MagSafe iPads.
In 2021, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claimed that Apple was considering adding a glass back to the 2022 iPad Pro, while also testing the MagSafe system. Unfortunately, neither was included in the 2022 iPad Pro, so it is impossible to say for certain at this time whether this rumor will actually be carried out.
While OLED is the biggest change rumored to be coming to the iPad Pro 2024, there are also reports that it will be part of a larger design refresh. This includes the possibility of the 12.9" model expanding to 13", and combined with the new display, it would not be surprising to see Apple make the back of the device made of glass.
The addition of MagSafe, assuming it is the same MagSafe found in the iPhone, would open up a whole new world of possibilities for the iPad. The iPad could be the first ever to offer wireless charging, a variety of new stands and accessories, and even a system like the Pixel Tablet, where the stand turns the tablet into Apple's smart display.
Of course, Apple's wireless charging is currently limited to 15W, which may not be enough for some Apple power users. There is always the possibility that Apple will introduce a MacBook-style MagSafe for the iPad Pro. However, that is not very appealing. [So far, it is not clear when the iPad Pro 2024 will be released. Mass production is said to begin in February, which could mean a mid-2024 release, rather than the typical Q1 release of previous models.
