Top 9 New Films Available This Week on Netflix, Max and More (Dec. 12 - Dec. 18)

December may be off to a bit of a slow start, but this week brings major new movies on Netflix, Max, Hulu, and other major streaming services.

Calling them major releases may be an understatement. Several of the blockbusters released this year will appear on streaming services this week. The first of these is "Barbie," which just grossed over $1 billion at the box office and was nominated for nine Golden Globe Awards. Joining it is Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, an extended version of Swift's birthday present to her fans on the paid video-on-demand streaming service.

Several of these titles will be available through new digital releases, so they can be purchased at a premium price (like the extended version of The Eras Tour). Here are the top new movies available for streaming this week. Plus, check out the best new shows streaming this week and the best new Netflix shows.

Taylor Swift's The Eras Tours took the world by storm, literally changing the economies of several cities where Swift arrived. But it was a hot ticket, so when Swift released a concert movie version of her massive tour, it gave many new people as well as rabid Swift fans a chance to catch the show. The extended concert movie version includes "Long Live," "The Archer," and "Wildest Dreams."

Chances are "Blue Jean" won't catch your eye. The film debuted at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2022, where it won the People's Choice Award. Now you can watch it on Hulu and see what you've been missing out on. Starring Rosie MacEwen as Jean, "Blue Jean" is the story of what happens when you are forced to live with a secret identity, or else your entire life could be in jeopardy. living as a closeted teacher in 1980s England, this story is not to be missed! Not to be missed.

Barbie needs no introduction. Greta Gerwig's film about the iconic Mattel doll was a critical and box office smash. It is currently the top-grossing movie of 2023 and was nominated for more Golden Globe Awards this year than any other film. Whether you spent time with Barbie (Margot) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) this year or have been waiting for it to stream, "Barbie" is clearly the top choice of movie to watch this week.

Remember Elvis from last year? Yes, this film is not that. This Sofia Coppola film stars Kylie Spaeny as Priscilla Presley (née Wagner), and it's her story. Of course, Elvis is also in the film, and Jacob Elordy gives a fine performance as the king of rock and roll, but this is an unabashed portrayal of Priscilla's relationship with Elvis, not the other way around. Also on display is the performance of Spaney as Priscilla, for which she was just nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama).

Whether you are a fan of the original 2000 film "Chicken Run" or Aardman Animation's other claymation masterpiece, "Chicken Run" is recommended: Dawn of the Nugget" needs to be added to your watch list. With Tandiwe Newton as Ginger (voiced by Julia Sawalha in "Chicken Run"), Zachary Levi as Rocky (voiced by Mel Gibson in "Chicken Run"), and Bella Ramsey as his daughter Molly, "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget" is a lot of fun. Sounds great.

If you like Lily Gladstone as Molly Burkhart in "To You Who Can't Blossom," "Undiscovered Country" is a must see. In this film, she plays a grieving woman driving through the American Midwest after receiving an unexpected invitation. The film has received almost universal acclaim, with a 91% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Gladstone recently winning the Gotham Independent Film Award for Outstanding Lead Actor. Don't miss this amazing performance by this amazing actress.

"Family Plan" star Mark Wahlberg plays Dan Morgan, a former hitman who is now a husband and family man. Unfortunately, his past catches up with him and Morgan has no choice but to hunt down the person from his past who wants to kill him. The Family Plan is going to be a fun, like "John Wick," but a comedy, with laughs, hijinks, and action scattered throughout. It's like "John Wick," but a comedy.

Paramount Plus' standout film this week is "Finestkind," a crime thriller set in Boston, Massachusetts. Estranged brothers Tom (Ben Foster) and Charlie (Toby Wallace) are reunited one fateful summer. Set in the world of commercial fishing, the brothers make dangerous deals with a violent crime syndicate, but soon find themselves having to make sacrifices and pay off debts. With their father (Tommy Lee Jones) and a mysterious young woman (Jenna Ortega) also involved, the brothers desperately seek a way out. - Rory Mellon

Available December 15 on Paramount Plus

"Asteroid City," which already made its streaming debut earlier this year, is the latest quirky Wes Anderson comedy to arrive on Prime Video. The film follows a family that travels to a small American desert town to compete in a junior stargazing event for young space cadets. As with many Anderson films, the cast is truly stellar, including Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Edward Norton, Bryan Cranston, and Jeffrey Wright. - Rory Mellon
