New Netflix movie based on a true story receives 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes

When it comes to what to watch this weekend on the best streaming services, Todd Haynes' film "May December" is at the top of the list. The Netflix film has been a critical favorite since its festival debut, and the buzz has continued since its theatrical release. And starting today (December 1), you can stream this Oscar contender on Netflix.

Starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, "May December" is loosely based on the true story of Mary Kay Letourneau, an elementary school teacher who was arrested and convicted of raping her 12-year-old student.

Now, that alone is an interesting story, but the narrative gets even weirder. Moore plays Gracie Atherton Yu, who, like Letourneau, had a child with her underage boyfriend Joe Yu (Charles Melton) while in prison. After she was released from prison, their relationship continued, lasting 23 years at the time the film began, and they had two more children.

Again, this alone is interesting enough - a loosely inspired retelling of a shocking true story. But "May 12" takes it a step further by introducing actress Elizabeth Berry in Portman's role. Berry has decided to put Gracie at the center of her next film, which will depict Gracie and Joe's illicit affair.

As she examines Gracie's life and her relationship with Joe, Berry, played by Portman, is drawn more and more into the character she is becoming.

If this sounds like the beginning of a horror/thriller movie, you're insane. If you peruse Rotten Tomatoes, critics will be quick to point out that the film is a "horror/thriller.

But that hasn't stopped them from raving about the film. Critics have rated "May December" 92% "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, and 193 reviews have earned it a fresh certification badge, along with a critical score of 8 out of 100.

Portman and Moore were deservedly praised for their performances, with Rolling Stone's David Fear calling the two acting heavyweights "immovable objects and irresistible forces."

The film was also praised by Richard Krauss for its "satire of true crime and tabloid adoration of crime," and Manohla Dargis of The New York Times said, "The structure of the film layered within the film is wonderful."

Audiences were even more bullish on the Netflix hit, with 93% rating it "fresh" and an average score of 4.6 out of 10. Again, praise was given to Portman and Moore for their talented performances, but also to Melton's performance as Yoo. One audience reviewer called Melton's performance "my favorite part of the film," and several others waxed poetic about how moved they were by his Yoo performance.

It is therefore not surprising that "May December" is already generating Oscar buzz for Netflix. In addition to positive reviews from critics and audiences, the film has won many of the awards it has been nominated for, including Melton's acting award. For those looking to stream one of the best films of the year, watch "The Lion in May" on Netflix this weekend.
