OpenAI has begun building ChatGPT 5, the next generation AI model GPT-5, which CEO Sam Altman acknowledged in a recent interview, claiming it has the potential to be super-intelligent, but will require further investment from longtime partner Microsoft to make it happen ...
According to the Financial Times, Altman said that his partnership with Microsoft is going very well and that he expects to raise more money from the creator of Windows and other investors over time.
Building a major AI model like ChatGPT requires billions of dollars in funding, tons of computer resources, training on billions and trillions of pages of data, and extensive tweaking and safety testing.
While GPT-4 is an impressive artificial intelligence tool, its capabilities are similar to or mirror humans in terms of knowledge and understanding. The next generation of AI models are expected to not only outperform humans in terms of knowledge, but also rival human ability to reason and process complex ideas.
This is also called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which provides the ability to express something new and original, rather than simply parrot a given thing into a new version. It is this kind of model that governments, regulators, and even the big tech companies themselves are debating how to prevent artificial intelligence from running amok and destroying humanity.
Microsoft has already invested more than $10 billion in OpenAI as part of a multi-year agreement, and Altman has said he hopes more will follow, as "there is a long road between here and AGI and a lot of computation to build."
Microsoft is shifting its entire business model around the use of AI by placing copilots at the forefront of Windows and various applications. So you can see how this investment will benefit the company's larger move into this area.
For Altman, however, the real product is intelligence. He told the FT: "Microsoft is shifting its entire business model around the use of AI, embedding the Copilot system built on top of GPT-4 into Windows, Microsoft 365, and other products. [GPT-5 requires more processing power and data than ever before. According to Altman, GPT-5 will use a combination of data that is publicly available online and data that Microsoft purchases from companies. It seeks data sets that are not widely used, such as conversational text and long sentences.
No time frame has been set for what GPT-5 will do, as it will not be known until it is completed; GPT-5 training is expected to take months, if not years, and is unlikely to be available to the public until some time after the training is completed.
