Google Chrome on Android just got an upgrade that iPhone users have had for years

Google Chrome is finally offering Android fans a feature that iPhone users have been using for nearly four years.

Read Later, which has been available in Chrome for iOS since March 2017, is now available in the experimental Android app Chrome Canary. This means that Read Later is finally coming to Chrome for Android.

Read Later, as the name implies, allows users to flag articles in Chrome that they would like to read later. This is a very simple feature that does not require you to fill up Chrome with bookmarked pages. However, Chrome on Android curiously does not have this feature, even on the latest phones like the Samsung Galaxy S21.

If you use third-party extensions like Safari's Reading List, Firefox's Pocket, or Pocket for Chrome, you have probably come across a similar feature. But it looks like it will finally be a native feature of Chome on Android.

If you want to try out this feature yourself, you can download Chrome Canary and give it a try. A long press on the link will bring up this option.

And this is the "Reading List" menu under the bookmarks section of the three dot menu.

This feature is also in development for the desktop version of Chrome. Just type chrome://flags in the omnibox and search for the "read later" flag.

We first heard evidence of this feature coming in 2020; Chrome already had options to download and bookmark web pages, but the latest in other browsers like Safari and Firefox Reading list functionality that other browsers like Safari and Firefox lacked.

If you want to continue using the stable version of the Google Chrome app, it may be some time before Read Later appears, since Chrome's last major update was Chrome 88 and Chrome Canary is currently at version 90, we may have to wait at least a few months. Or, if the Read Later feature is the final deciding factor in switching from the best Android phone, here's a list of the best iPhones.
