Microsoft Surface Pro8 Looks Closer Than Ever — What We've Learned Now

We've been tracking the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 rumors for quite some time, and just when it seemed like we'd gone silent, more rumor smoke has been released.

Windows Latest has spotted FCC certification for Microsoft's new hardware, which appears to be the Surface Pro 8. The entry, which was just modified on January 4, focuses on LTE cellular capabilities, and Windows Latest notes that Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 are also noted to be on the menu.

When can we expect to see the Surface Pro 8? Rumors put it in the first half of 2021; CES 2021 is coming up soon, but we don't expect the magic to happen there: Microsoft usually announces new gear at its own events.

One thing we don't know, and want to know soon, is how long the Surface Pro 8's battery will last. Our review of the Surface Pro 7 was disappointing, with an endurance of 7 hours and 52 minutes.

So the leaked information so far has not exactly been surprising. For starters, the Surface Pro 8 will feature an 11th generation Intel Tiger Lake processor and Xe graphics. This is fairly predictable, since Microsoft would have either run this or switched to AMD's latest chips.

The design of the Surface Pro 8, however, is a bit disappointing. Leaked images suggest that Microsoft is sticking with the same design and keeping the bezels a bit thicker than recent sensations.

The Surface Pro 8 will have up to 32GB of RAM, a 100% increase from the previous 16GB; the Core i7 model will reportedly have up to 1TB of internal storage. For more affordable models, the 8GB RAM model is expected to come with 128GB or 256GB of storage, while the 16GB RAM model will be available in 256GB SSD and 512GB SSD versions.

Regarding LTE. It may not come standard. Previous leaks indicated that LTE capability would only be available on the Core i5 version. This means that the more powerful Core i7 version of the Surface Pro 8 may have features that the mid-range version does not. Time will tell if this rumor will come to fruition.
