Apple AirTags have been missing in action at three separate Apple events this fall. And while it might suggest we wait until 2021 to see Apple's long-rumored Key Finder, a tracker could pop up next week.

Previously, leaks had suggested that AirTags were ready to launch with the iPhone 12 in October. However, that event went away without AirTags making an appearance, as did the launch of the Apple Silicon in November. The general attitude from leakers now sharing what are supposedly Apple AirTags specs is that we should wait until March 2021 for the new device.

And now new rumors suggest that an Apple product will appear on Tuesday, December 8. And one of the candidates is Apple's AirTags. Here is everything we know about Apple's AirTags prior to when they will be released.

Apple is trying to challenge Tile Pro to make the best key finder on the market, and if it works seamlessly with the company's device ecosystem, it stands a good chance.

Like other key finders, AirTags attach to the object you want to track, such as keys, computers, wallets, or other valuables. The tracker then connects to your cell phone and can locate misplaced or lost items.

There are significant differences between current key finders and the AirTags that Apple is reportedly developing. Most key finders connect to cell phones via Bluetooth. AirTags, however, are rumored to use the U1 ultra-wideband sensor that Apple added to last fall's iPhone 11 models and will probably be included in this year's iPhone 12 models. If so, AirTags would have a greater range than the traditional Key Finder, allowing for more accurate location tracking.

It is widely believed that Air Tags will work with the iPhone's built-in "Find My" app, which can already locate friends and Apple products based on their location.

A report by Josh Constine reveals more details about how AirTags will work. Much of that report focuses on a new augmented reality app called Gobi, but apparently the AR functionality will be extended to the Find My app; according to the code shown to Constine, you can hold up your iPhone and scan the room to find objects connected to AirTag scan the room to look for objects connected to the AirTag.

Pricing for the Apple AirTags 2020 has not yet been suggested, but key finders typically cost less than $50. If Apple wants to compete with the likes of Tile and Chipolo, one can expect AirTags to be sold in that range, despite Apple's reputation for expensive accessories.

However, we do not know how many features Apple intends to pack into the AirTags. Factors such as long range, clear alarm tones, accurate alerts, and perfect iOS integration could add value to AirTags.

The first hints about AirTags were dropped just before the iPhone 11 launch over a year ago. Rumors about AirTags popped up just before subsequent Apple events, but events such as the Worldwide Developer Conference in June and the Apple Watch 6 launch in September ended without AirTags making an appearance.

Apple held three events this fall to announce the new Apple Watch, iPhone 12, and MacBooks with Apple's new M1 chip. At every event, someone suggested that AirTags would be available, but each time AirTags did not appear. Therefore, many believe that AirTags will remain out of sight until at least March 21.

However, a leaked internal AppleCare memo warns service providers that AppleCare changes will take place on December 8. People therefore speculate that Apple may introduce new hardware on that date.

From the updated Apple TV to the rumored AirPods Studio headphones, there is no shortage of options that Apple could roll out. However, AirTags would also be a possibility if the key tracker is ready to roll out.

As for evidence of AirTags appearing, an Apple video titled "How to erase your iPhone" (deleted after the original posting) mentions the name AirTags for only 2 seconds, but Appleosophy is within the "Find My iPhone" settings 1 We found it around :40.

Under "Enable Offline Search," it says, "Offline Search lets you find this device and AirTags when you are not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular."

According to another video by Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech, the Apple AirTags are circular and "just slightly larger than a bottle cap." The product features a clean white front and a polished metal back with the Apple logo.

It is clear that Apple is developing something to help iPhone users manage their valuables. However, it is unclear when that product will debut.

It could be as early as Tuesday, December 8, if one believes Apple will announce new hardware on that date. However, Apple typically refrains from modest product rollouts in favor of updates to existing products; AirTags would be the kind of new product that would benefit from being announced at a special Apple event, perhaps alongside other high-profile Apple releases.

We hope we are wrong, but we would not expect AirTags to arrive until next year.
