If your AirPods Pro earbuds don't sound their best, the problem isn't just in your head; Apple has acknowledged that some of its wireless earbuds are experiencing audio issues and announced a new repair program that will repair AirPods Pro for free.
According to an Apple support document posted today (October 30), "a small percentage of AirPods Pro" may have audio quality issues. Specific problems cited by Apple include crackling and static that becomes more noticeable when in loud places, exercising, or talking on the phone.
Active noise cancellation may not work as expected on some models of the AirPods Pro; according to Apple, problems include loss of bass and increased ambient noise.
This issue affects AirPods Pro units manufactured before October 2020, so those who purchased this month may not be affected.
Defective AirPods Pro models can be brought to an Apple-owned store or Apple-authorized repair location to have the earphones repaired free of charge; Apple's website provides links to authorized service providers; contact Apple Support You can also.
This repair program does not extend the warranty period. Also, the reported problems appear to be limited to the AirPods Pro; other versions of AirPods are not included in this program.
