The shortage of Nvidia RTX3080 is worse than expected — here's why

You may find it difficult to get your hands on the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 until 2021, as Nvidia's CEO has stated that the inventory shortage will last until next year.

Jensen Huang, who founded Nvidia, said demand for the $699 RTX 3080 and the very expensive $1499 RTX 3090 is so high that graphics card manufacturers cannot keep up. And with the holiday season looming, that demand is not likely to subside anytime soon.

"We believe that demand will outstrip supply throughout the year," Juan said during a Q&A at Nvidia's GTC conference, Tom's Hardware reported. 'We have to remember, we are entering a double whammy. The double whammy is the holiday season.

"Even before the holiday season, we are doing incredibly well, and then you add the 'amperage factor' on top of that, and then you add the 'amperage holiday factor' on top of that, and we are in for a really, really big Q4 season."

Bad news for anyone planning to build a new Nvidia-based gaming PC this fall. We are having a hard time finding retailers with RTX 3080 or RTX 3090 in stock. [This is because the RTX 3080 offers enormous power for less than the $999 GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, which was Team Green's GPU champion. In addition, the PS5 and Xbox Series X's support for ray tracing further enhances ray tracing support, making the RTX 3080 quite an attractive GPU.

The RTX 3090 may seem overkill to most people. However, it is probably sold out due to frustrated Nvidia fans who could not afford the RTX 3080 and chose to get a more powerful graphics card.

AMD is working on an "Nvidia killer" Big Navi graphics card that will challenge the RTX 3080, and the new Radeon RX 6000 series, to be announced on October 28, is also likely intended to compete with the GeForce RTX 3070. If AMD can offer powerful graphics cards at prices below Nvidia's and have plenty of cards in stock, they could have a winning card this fall.

So why is Nvidia struggling to have enough next-generation graphics cards for its devoted fans? Juan explained that Nvidia's inventory shortage is not due to their inability to produce enough RTX 3080 cards, but due to huge demand.

"The 3080 and 3090 have a demand problem, not a supply problem," Huang said. Huang said, "For the 3080 and 3090, there is not a supply problem, but a demand problem.

Nvidia has delayed the release of the RTX 3070 to ensure that it is in stock to meet the high demand expected when the RTX 3070 arrives on October 29. However, with so much power on offer for $499, this graphics card is also expected to sell out fairly quickly.
