Nvidia GeForce RTX3080 looks imminent — here's the proof

Nvidia's next high-end RTX GPU, possibly the Nvidia RTX 3080, may be nearing release. This is according to a South Korean regulatory filing, which suggests that a release is imminent ahead of Nvidia's event scheduled for September 1.

Videocardz reports that the Korean National Radio Research Institute has certified a board designated PG133A. The board is the Founder's Edition of the rumored RTX 3080 Ti (RTX 3090) and is speculated to be the flagship model that will replace NVIDIA's upcoming RTX 2000 line.

Rumors about Nvidia's next generation of enthusiast-grade GPUs continue to abound. However, few specific details have been revealed; even the official name of the Ampere lineup is shrouded in mystery.

Some say the flagship card will be called the RTX 3080 Ti, following the naming scheme Nvidia has used for years. Others, however, state that the card will omit the Ti branding and debut as the RTX 3090. At this point, it is not clear which direction Nvidia will take, but more details on resolving this issue should be forthcoming soon.

In the two years since the RTX 2000 series was introduced, not many games have taken advantage of the ray tracing capabilities introduced by the card; despite the raw horsepower of the RTX 2080 Ti, maintaining playable frame rates at resolutions above 1080p while still allowing ray tracing is difficult; technologies like DLSS help alleviate these performance issues, but players complain about having to compromise while owning Nvidia's most powerful enthusiast GPUs.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the RTX 3080 Ti/RTX 3090 is whether it has the power to deliver ray tracing in UHD without having to sacrifice frame rates or other aspects of graphic fidelity. With the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles supporting DXR, we may finally see a reasonable number of titles that take advantage of ray tracing.

Nvidia's high-end cards are expensive, and that is rumored to continue with future GPUs. Therefore, the performance per dollar of the RTX 3080 Ti/RTX 3090 will be of great interest to potential buyers.

It looks like we won't have to wait too long for more details on Nvidia's next GPU; if the PG133A is indeed the RTX 3080 Ti/RTX 3090, the countdown Nvidia has announced on Twitter and set for September 1 at noon (Japan time) coincides with the GeForce event. We have a little over a week to put these rumors to rest and see what is actually going to take place.
