One developer claims that the Xbox Series X has the power to run their games at 120 frames per second, but the PS5 cannot achieve the same results.
That developer is Dynamic Voltage Games, which is developing Orphan of the Machine, a side-scroller about the underwater adventures of a dolphin. Originally announced as an Xbox Series X exclusive, the game will also be available on PS5, but will not run at 4K and 120fps. [The Xbox Series X will offer 12 teraflops of computing power compared to the PS5's 10.28 teraflops. It is not clear how much of a difference that will be.
However, given Dynamic Voltage Games' tweet that the PS5 cannot handle "Orphan of the Machine" running at 120fps, the 1.72 teraflops difference seems to be significant for some titles.
When Dynamic Voltage Games posted on Twitter that "Orphan of the Machine" would be available on PS5 but would not run as fast on the Xbox Series X, PlayStation fans took them to task. However, Dynamic Voltage Games chose to respond to this negative reaction by explaining that it was not due to a developer's judgment, but rather that Sony's consoles do not seem to support games at 120 fps like the Xbox Series X at the hardware level
.
"[Microsoft] seems to value 120fps more than [Sony], which is why they assigned that feature to [Series X]," Dynamic Voltage Games tweeted, adding that if the resolution is reduced, PS5 can also run "Orphan of the Machine may be able to run "Orphan of the Machine" at 120fps, he noted.
Dynamic Voltage Games stated that it is not blaming Sony for the frame rate difference. Rather, they stated that "different hardware, different results," which indicates that the two consoles share the same AMD-based processor and graphics architecture, but are approached in different ways.
The Xbox Series X may be designed to allow developers to better utilize its power to run games at 120 fps. However, neither Microsoft nor Sony have revealed much about games running at 4K and 120 fps; 4K and 60 fps seems to be a more common target, and the PS5 seems capable of achieving that.
Microsoft will hold an Xbox 20/20 event on July 23 to showcase a handful of Xbox Series X games, mostly first-party. There, we expect to get a better glimpse of what the Xbox Series X can do.
Sony has already shown off a few games that will be available on PS5, such as Horizon Forbidden West, which looked spectacular. So even if Sony is unable to achieve widespread adoption of 120 fps games, it is still in an enviable position to offer next-generation games.
