PS5 events may include the release of a new God of War game

The PS5 event on June 11 is all about gameplay, but you can't have gameplay without games. Sony will likely showcase a mix of third- and first-party titles, but has yet to reveal what those titles will be. However, we may get a hint from the lead developer of 2018's hit God of War.

Jeet Shroff, gameplay director at Sony Santa Monica Studios, was the engineering lead on "God of War" (2018), a sequel/soft reboot of Sony's long-running escapist action series On June 9, he shared a tweet:

"Join us as we get closer to the details of what lies ahead in the future!" Shroff wrote, along with a link to a PlayStation tweet about the June 11 event.

The response to Shroff's tweet was creative, to say the least. Many fans and pundits have breathlessly claimed that Shroff's tweet almost confirms that a new "God of War 2" game will be announced at the PS5 event. While that is certainly not implausible, it is also important to point out that Shroff did not say anything about "God of War," and historically, a new "God of War" game has yet to be announced.

First, if we take Shroff's tweet at face value, then yes, Sony Santa Monica will have a presence at the PS5 event. (Unless Shroff meant "we" to mean the PlayStation developer community, which is possible.) This could mean a new God of War game. It could also mean that someone on the team wants to share some general programming insight, or that the team is working on a new IP, or that an older God of War game is being ported over to demonstrate a PS5 feature or something. (God of War III was ported to PS4 to demonstrate the system's frame rate improvements, etc.)

If Sony does unveil a new "God of War" game, fans should keep in mind that it may not be a launch title. The main God of War games tend to be released at intervals of three to five years. The last God of War game was released in 2018, so 2021 seems a reasonable release date for the next installment. On the other hand, only two years have passed between the first and second God of War games released on PS2.

If you want to see for yourself, the event will take place on June 11 at 4 p.m. ET on PlayStation's official YouTube and Twitch channels.
