The PS5 will be a revolutionary gaming console, despite its specs. So says one optimistic developer, an opinion that seems to be quite controversial among some of the gaming community on Twitter.
Andrea Pessino, co-founder of game developer Ready At Dawn, called the PS5's capabilities "revolutionary" in a tweet yesterday (March 19, via PushSquare).
Pessino, who worked on the "Warcraft" and "Diablo" franchises during his tenure at Blizzard Entertainment, said that Xbox Series X supporters and PlayStation fans unimpressed with the PS5's disclosed specs have been calling his claims, after which he elaborated on his claims.
Pessino concluded that "a console is more than the sum of its specs" and that the other improvements made to the PS5 to outperform the PS4 will help developers more easily realize their vision, and that "focusing on metrics is missing the big picture."
The Xbox Series X has 12 teraflops of GPU power, compared to 10.3 for the PS5. However, a "Road to PS5" talk earlier this week by Mark Cerny, head of PS5 architects, revealed many useful improvements, including SSD storage, an audio system, and Xbox-like features such as ray tracing.
We still expect both consoles to be released in time for the 2020 holiday season, although a coronavirus outbreak could change that timeline.
Only when both consoles are widely used will we be able to see if Pesino's prediction was correct, or if the supposed "common sense" claim that "more teraflops = better" is correct after all.
