The PS5 controller upgrade makes the game more immersive than ever

The PS5, like all previous PlayStation consoles, will feature a new generation of controllers, and while we've heard a few things about the upcoming features of the Dualshock 5, this latest rumor is about a feature that literally gives the controller its name.

SegmentNext (via BGR) has uncovered a new Sony patent that conveys the possibility of a significant upgrade to the controller's haptic feedback and vibration features. It was filed with the USPTO in April 2017 and published in February 2020.

Instead of the rumble motors we have seen in Sony controllers since the original DualShock, the patent details the use of a "voice coil actuator" instead. This actuator was originally designed for traditional telephone speakers, but is now used in a variety of applications.

Depending on the amount of current sent through the actuator, the magnet and coil assembly can move at different speeds and distances along the actuator's shaft, giving two adjustable settings. Current dual-shock controllers can only change the rotational speed of the two built-in rumble motors.

This will allow for more control over the vibrations produced by the controller, hopefully resulting in more meaningful and intuitive tactile feedback that will enhance game immersion and serve as a useful indicator for the player.

The PS5 controller could also break new ground in other ways. Another recent Sony patent details how the controller could monitor heart rate and perspiration and adjust the game or make decisions based on the player's reaction to certain situations.

The problem with patents, however, is that they don't always make it into products. And, of course, there is always the possibility that such technology Sony is working on may not be ready in time for the launch of the PS5 this year. We may not get our hands on this wonderful new haptic technology until the PS6 or even longer.
