Apple's spring event will be held and we may see the new iPad Pro 2021 and AirTags. However, that date seems to be up in the air.
Taiwan's Economic Daily reports that Apple's next big event will be held on Tuesday, March 16. Suffice it to say that the translation engine is not very helpful about the nature of its source, but the article cites two Twitter accounts - @LeaksApplePro and @FrontTron - as having independently come up with the same date.
But they didn't. One of the most reliable Apple reporters, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, has clearly stated that the date is off the table.
More interestingly, LeaksApplePro responded by saying it would "do some more research" and then tweeted that while there was no confirmation of the 16th, there was no doubt that there would be an event in March.
In other words, the March 16 date should certainly be taken with a grain of salt, but something is coming. Spring events have long been a feature of Apple's calendar, with the 2020 iPad Pro debuting on March 18; 2019 was March 25 and 2018 was March 27, so it could certainly be later.
There is a long list of what we might see at Apple's Spring 2021 event, but the report keeps the list of likely candidates to three: a new iPad Pro, a refreshed iPad mini, and the long-awaited AirTags.
The show The star of the show will undoubtedly be the 2021 iPad Pro. While there will be no dramatic design changes, the tablet is said to feature an upgraded mini LED display, new built-in magnets to enhance accessories, and 5G for those willing to pay extra for a cellular model.
Next up is the iPad mini 6, which hasn't been refreshed since 2019. While that may seem like a long time from Apple's perspective, it is worth remembering that prior to that it had not released a new mini tablet since 2015. In any case, given that the 2019 version looked a lot like its 2015 predecessor, this could be a more dramatic design change. Rumors suggest that the bezels will be smaller and the display may be enlarged to 8.4 inches.
Finally, there is the Air Tag. This product finder will reportedly sync with other devices via a U1 Ultra Wideband sensor and will be a competitor to the Tile; AirTags has been in the works for some time, but has not appeared at the last few events. Could this be the time? Leaker Jon Prosser seems to think so, tweeting last week that they are "still in March" and that he has "heard no further delays this time around."
Other possibilities not mentioned include AirPods 3, AirPods Pro 2, and a refreshed 2021 iMac (possibly with Apple Silicon built in), but there is only so much that can be covered in one event, Prosser does not think these are likely at this time.
Next month should (hopefully) clarify.
